Introduction and problems with laptops

Hello everyone. let me first introduce myself, cause I’m new here.

My name is Niels Berndsen, I’m from the Netherlands and live in a small town called Nieuw Vennep. I’m a huge computer and computer games fan and also fan of computer animatics, animation and 3D.

Welll since a year I’ve got finally a laptop, so I can take my work everywhere I can. But with Blender I’ve got major problems, not the the program isn’t running… I can’t use it. It started during the download of Blender version 2.27. When I start this version up, it comes perfectly with the blender interface, but all the buttons, all the icons and text on these buttons… are missing and have been replaced by Black square blocks.

I’ve had contact with Ton Roosendaal of NAN, makers of Blender, but He couldn’t help me out so he gave me the link of this forum for help.

Also with the latest version of Blender, version 2.28, I still have got the same problems… all the buttons on the interface are showngi Black squares instead of Text and icons.

For technical info, I’m using on my laptop Windows XP pro and the laptop self is a SONY VAIO. With other programs I don’t have any trouble what so ever.

I hope that some of you here on this forum can help me out.

Thank you all very much in advance.

I’m sure Ton told you that already, but did you try download newer versions of your video card drivers? XP’s default drivers are usually sucky at best.

Welll Theeth… I’ve tried what you’ve told me to do and still I’m having these black sqaures within the buttons. I still can’t work blender. :frowning:

It looks like a font error but that can’t be because then every button on each program would have this error.

I hope that anyone out there has got some more info for me what to do.

Thanks in advancen, Niels Bernsden

As far as I know, this is a know issue of older ATI cards. The machine in my office had the same problem until I turned the video acceleration off. Gave me my icons back for the price of even weaker 3d performance. ATI is evil.

ati does not, and did not adhear to opengl standards, instead spending time and money in the directx field.

Try turning off international fonts:

Drag down the top bar, click the Language and Fonts button (3rd blue button from the left  ) and click the international fonts button (top left)

some have said changing their color depth fixes just that problem

I forget if it is 16 bit or 32 (or 24) that works better, try it.

(in display properties, settings tab)

Hereby I would like to say thank you very much to al of you and for your advice. I’ve tried them all and in the end it turned out that z3r0 d Had the right advice for me.

indeed my video settings where much too high and where set to 32 Bits colours. By returning them to 24 bits High colour instead of the highest, all the icons returned and finally I can go with the course.

Thank you all very much.

Greetings from Niels from the Netherlands

It may be your system’s display properties. Minimize Blender and go into the display properties, check to make sure the color depth is set to 16.
