Is a GTX 285 really faster than a 650 Ti Boost 2gb?

Hi guys,

I bought a 650ti boost 2gb, to replace my GTX 285 so I can use GPU rendering. However, I don’t know what to do with the gtx 285 now. According to this site:

http://www.hwcompare.com/13873/geforce-gtx-285-1gb-vs-geforce-gtx-650-ti-2gb/

The gtx285 should be faster! If that’s the case, I should only use the 650 to render, seeing that the 285 is not capable of GPU render with blender?

Thanks!
Mr D

There can be a massive difference in power based on the last two digits of the number that is used to denote different models.

A GTX 285 for example has ‘85’ at the end, this number is typically used for one of Nvidia’s highest end cards in that generation and may actually be two GPU’s wrapped together and in SLI mode.

Models ending with ‘50’ meanwhile can be considered mid-range at best, it might not be a huge numerical difference, but the way Nvidia sets the power on the models can mean major differences. (the ‘boost’ moniker means it’s supposedly faster than a 650 though the specs. show it’s just a regular 650 that’s been clocked higher by default).

If you want high end, then you should look for generation numbers ending with ‘80’ or above, ‘60’, ‘50’, and ‘40’ is mid-range, while ‘20’ and ‘10’ is low-end.

Hey Ace, thanks for that. That is very helpful.

But comparing the 200 series to the 600, I’m still curious if the 285 is really still better than the 650 according to that website. Rendering aside, that is (I know it would be better to render with the 650 since it can do gpu w/ blender.)

Well the 650 will definitely be the card to use for Cycles because you would actually be able to render scenes then (should still be faster than the majority of CPU’s on the market today).

There are some differences between CPU and GPU rendering besides speed though, SSS is not yet available for the GPU and the GPU advantage may lesson or even disappear when you get into real complex scenes (that and the fact that would have to fit all of your scenes into 2 gigabytes of VRAM).

That is theoretical comparison that looks at the specs only. Looks like those are correct specs though and at least on paper the differences are big enough to make 285 way faster (core clock, memory bandwidth). The design is different too so only real use/benchmarks tells which is faster and how much for particular usage. Power consumption difference is quite impressive though.

What hasn’t been mentioned is that nVidia has a reputation of rebranding their cards. http://www.pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/NVIDIA-Introduces-Two-New-Rebranded-600-Series-Cards
Low end is low, no matter what series. Quick Google search didn’t tell that 650 TI would be something else with a different name.

Good info guys. So that leaves me to wonder, if my 4-5 year old card beats this 2013 card! Guess I need to play some games on both to try them out. I just hope it is NOT slower than the much older card… because I’m not sure if I can use two cards in my comp. Still have to do the research on that. Not even sure I should use 2, seeing that it would run hotter in there.

The 285 is a single GPU card, dont confuse it with a 295. And no, it is not. The Boost is roughly 50% faster than a 460 which was round about the same speed as a GTX285 in games. However, it might not be the upgrade you have been waiting for given that the 285 was released in early 2009. The 285 has massive bandwith but dont let that fool you. They had to equip it with that because it was their entry into GPGPU- in gaming the chip was way to0 slow to make any practical use of it. The 480s only increased bandwith and theoretical fillrate only slightly but tore the 285 to shreds in gaming. Sell it. It is a hot cookie and hardly of any practical use any longer.

anaho thanks a bunch for your reply. I’m not sure what you mean by saying “it might not be the upgrade you’ve been waiting for”. And just to be clear, I’m getting the 650 ti boost 2gb.

Thanks!
