is it necessary to uv layout properly

Hi is it necessary to uv layout properly in we are doing polypainting texture…because no matter how we unwrap it it contains proper pixel density as we directly paint on model.
Hope this is not a stupid question…

Layout can make easier painting in external applications
Good layout makes best use of the UV space so could allow use of a smaller image but still have better resolution in your painted texture.

If you don’t care about optimizing you don’t really need to, you can throw a 4k texture at it and it will still look good even if you don’t maximize usage of the UV map.

For games it’s a good thing to try to do a better job though, you can even do stuff like mirror UVs for symmetrical parts of the mesh (like the face) and you will get better texel density.
