Is It Possible To Offer Matcap Setting In All Blender Versions!

Hi, just wondering if we can’t have the ability to use “Matcaps” in Blender 2.57 and going forward. I just downloaded 2.56 and there is no option to use Matcaps unless you download a sculpt build. It would be nice to have the ability to use a matcap when sculpting in any version. Anyone else want this option too!

You can do it this way :

But yes, a built in function is preferable, and it will probably reach blender soon

But the matcap Viewport shading was implemented in one of the sculpt builds.
Would be very nice if it brought back.

I wish those matcap workaround were not requiring glsl to work, maybe it’s because my system is far from super high end, but when i tried i had a noticable impact on performance when using glsl matcap from when not using them on high poly sculpture pieces .

Meanwhile, you can try to play with the lights in User Preferences -> System -> OpenGL solid lights, you can obtain some usefull or just fun results, too bad the interface to set those lights position is much less intuitive in 2.56a than in 2.49b (using values instead of using graphic representations)
from the default :

by tweaking values and positions of those solid lights you can obtain by example :

Would be a good thing if it was possible to actually save all the results that satisfy you as presets, so you could switch from one to another without having to try to remake them in the User Preferences.
