you know how it is. We should all be part 3D generalist while specializing in part of the pipeline.
I like modeling the most, but it seems like there’s not much need for contract modelers anymore because there’s a slew of free and/or cheap models readily available online. Heck, I know two people in my hometown alone that are starting their own model libraries. Games also have “intern modelers” in the credits after you beat them.
Anyone know what the most competitive part of the pipeline is?
Those who have the knowledge to write (code!) shaders, and can program in Houdini, Maya, and such are still in high demand. The more technical the job is, the less people will be able to do it. Technical directors, custom rig development, etcetera.
As it stands you will have to be an excellent and fast modeller to succeed in that area. There is (far too) much competition.
However, don’t let that deter you if it is your true passion. You could always find a niche to work in - for example, architectural and medical work is much more lucrative than creating models for games.
AMEN! I do a lot of freelance architectural rendering and animations. Another area almost completely ignored by 3d artists in general is training films.
