Is there a cheap way to visualize light paths?

Is there a cheap way to visualize (individual) light paths? IE to display the calculated paths as lines or color superimposed over the geometry without using a volume scattering shader?

Added: Ideally of individual photons/samples or the sum of a set number of samples.

Some thing like discussed here? Then, well, no.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I thought of something similar.
