Is there a good standalone 3D map terrain generator out there anywhere?

I have looked around and the only one that comes close is the 3D map generator.com but it is a plugin for Photoshop and is very limited in the angles that are produced. So it doesn’t seem to be a real 3D model. I also looked at World Creator but it appears to be for building a 3D model but I could not find info on whether it can generate a map from topographical sources.

Can anyone recommend other software out there or links to them?

Thank you

You mean something like Terragen?

or do you mean something more like GIS software:

Looks more like Terragen. I want to take something like google maps and something that gives height topography so that I can make a 3D model of an area (with realistic ground textures) and then export it to Blender to create buildings or whatever on the model.

Thanks Lumpengnom for taking the time to reply like you did.

There is a Blender Addon for Open Street Maps. It gets the terrain, places different types of houses, streets, railways and things like that. Its quality is good for shots that don´t require the camera to be very close. Houses that are close you have to model an place yourself if you want it to look half ways realistic. It costs 5 buck for the standard version or 18 for the premium version. I think the 18 dollars are well worth it. There is also a thread somewhere here on Blenderartists about the addon.

Also, in Houdini since v16

updates v17

Thanks for all the replies…I have a lot to look at. Will reply once I have had the time to look those videos over and the links. Thanks again…
