Is there a short-cut for converting a triangle-based mesh to a square-based mesh?

When I import a .X file, I have a triangle based mesh and it looks all chunky in Blender and such. What I’m wondering is if there is a tool or command in Blender somewhere to automatically go through and kill all the cross-lines and turn the triangles into squares giving me something that’s a little easier to clean up than going through and re-facing the entire thing by hand?

you can try selecting all in edit mode, ctrl f, tris to quads.

isn’t it alt-j?

that works too. I can’t remember all of the shortcuts.
