Hi there, after almost 3 years absence from blender & yafray (3D in general…) I’m struggling my way back to this wonderful piece of software
So here I am testing all these nice new tools and trying to brush up my skills in modeling, texturing, lighting etc.
I have stared at this scene for too long now, so I ask YOU out there: Does this look like a glass of milk??? Maybe something like <0,1% fat
Just tried to keep it simple, so no caustics etc. for now. Blender 2.37a - MHsssb04 - yafray CVS
Thank you - I’ll try to get some reflections and caustics into the scene. Does anybody know how get a “non grainy” result with HDR background and usable rendertimes? I had something like 3 minutes for this one with full GI enabled (medium).
Meniscus at the milk-glass interface. there ought to be a book called “You too, can love meniscuses!”
The SSS could be increased a tad more - it’s looking nice but milk really does have this glow to it
The top is saturated from the light (so it seems)
I drink non-fat, and it always seems to me to have an ever so slight blue cast to it, your milk seems to have a ?tan? cast to it up near the top next to the glass
The glass looks good to me. You might check the bottom of it and see if it isn’t ever so slightly touching the surface (or intersecting) your table or base plane. I can see patches at the bottom of the glass “inside” it that seem to be indicative of this phenomenon
I think it looks really good and it won’t take much work to really polish it up.
the serface of the milk seems much to flat. Also, where the top of the milk meets the glass, the milk should be rounder ever so slightly. Currently the edge is too sharp.
Thanks a lot for the useful crits! Ok, the meniscus… I’d like to say “hey I really love meniscuses” but I’m sorry, I have some problems understanding what you mean in this case. Maybe there is another explanation for it…? (Sorry for my english ).
I will work on the SSS (yes the top is saturated an I am still searching for the glow)
I think you are right about the tan cast - have to change it a bit. Just don’t have any milk here - and where I have the milk I have no time to render.
ah… I see… thanks! Maybe this is the meniscus? There is actually what you mean, its only too thin… can’t see it in the rendered image. I’ll work on that.
Sorry dreamflange - didn’t mean to cause confusion with the meniscus comment.
I am going to have to give that Makehuman SSS thingamabob a try. The glow that you do have in the SSS part is ok, but you just need to tweak it, that’s all.
At first I thought you had translucency on and was thinking you should bump it up, then realized that you were using SSS (too cool).
Add a chocolate chip cookie to that glass of milk and my oh my oh my…
As for the graininess with HDRI images… Here is the “bible” on yafray illumination… Alejandro wrote a very nice document in PDF format.
Hey critter, I appreciate your suggestions - no need to be sorry!
Currently I am trying to get the SSS right for the “milk”… the skript works fine for a skin-like feel but it seems (for me) to be difficult with the solid model in the glass. pffffrt! A little frustrating
I’ll post an image when I get something better done. Ah, and thanks for the link - very helpful!
The milk looks too blue… It should be more yellow-white… But the coustics is nice… I don’t realy now what a spoon do in plain milk, but if it’s stayin’ there you should make it metallic.
The main reason this still looks unreal is that the milk mesh is not intersecting with the sides of the glass. You appear to have an air gap, which is particularly large near the bottom of the glass.
Thanks again for the crits, i really got stuck with the “milk” model. Seems to be the model itself that causes the problems with the SSS skript. Cleaning up the mesh resulted in the air gap sornen mentioned.
If anyone has suggestions or examples how to work out the lighting for the MHsss in a scene like this - please let me know! I will freeze this little project until I find a better solution an move on to something new
