When i tried from 480p first render to 1080p, it looked like garbage.
but what about 1080p to 4k using scaling?

What a weird question. Obviously, 1080p is already sharper than 480p upscaled to 1080p. Thus, 1080p upscaled to 4k is AT LEAST as sharp, if not sharper.
forgive me, im stupid./
technically, in terms of the benefits you would get, it would be less of a stretch to get to 4k from 1080p than it would be to get to 1080p from 480p
480p>1080p = 5x more pixels
1080p>4k = 4x more pixels
Depends what you use. But yes, I upscaled a couple of HD renders to UHD using Topaz Labs and the results were quite acceptable.
ok im clearly doing something wrong with the scale node. its zooming in instead of going 4k
If you are just scaling in blender, don’t bother. Just be happy with 1080p.
If you want to use a dedicated upscaler, then go for it, but blender’s scaling will get you no benefits other than bigger file sizes.
This depens your final render size. 480p to 1080p for 1080p render is nearly same as 1080p to 4K for 4K render.
But for AI upscaling, 1080p to 4K always will be sharper.
which is?
i was thinking of upscaling during export in davinci resolve
Davinci does have a quality upscaler, that would be fine.
