Issues with texturing

I’m having some problems with adding a simple texture map to a model. The model is basically an eye with legs and arms all i want to add is some color in pupil. The rest of the body is just a yellowish color. I thought i mapped it correctly but when i render this is the result. RenderHere is a screen shot from blender Screen shot.

The steps i took were to get the image of the wire frame an used Inkscape to make the colored circles then brought it back into blender and fiddled around till i got it go in the model. I used a combination of tutorials form the blender site and another site. I can try to get more specific if i need to. The texture is just being squished a little. The colors should all be circles, and fill the inset part of the eye. Any suggestions would help.
