It's a Commodore 64 (again).

Altered lighting and made the textured plastic less subtle. I actually prefer the previous render’s lighting but I suppose this is more realistic. If anyone has any tips please post!

Cool! The first computer we ever owned was a Commodore 64! I learned how to program on one of those!

omg look at the stream line ultra cool style and there telling me they only cost US$595 omg thats a bargen

lol good work cant say much there a bit before my time

ah the commodore … sometimes i think i was meant to be born a few decades earlier. i have the emulator and can only fantasize about having one :frowning: man would i love to try out one in real life . real nice looking , but it just looks a little to … cg. bgut i love the detail and all like the textures on the buttons.

You can have mine if you come and get it… I live in Sweden…

They’re dirt cheap on eBay, I have about five of them plus a massive collection of original tapes.

Can anyone suggest how I can make this look less ‘CG’? Any lighting tips?

Thanks.

There are many opinions about good lighting - here’s mine:

I think you could use more light sources to ‘fill’ the scene with light - play with the ‘No Specular’ option to control the highlights (I like the speculars you got on the keys).

And I prefer smooth shadows for product visualisations. A sharp shadow is good for outdoor scenes with direct sunlight or if you see a lamp that directly lights the object.

One more: I think the side edges could be a bit smoother - I know, they were hard on some versions, but I think it would give a more natural look.

Concerning the material, I preferred the first (less bumpy) version. And if you get the metallic look of the “C= commodore==64” and the “POWER” labels, it will become a masterpiece.

Very good so far, I’m really looking forward to updates.

how much i miss it…

Very cool. I actually prefer the render in Finished Projects. Why? Because it looks like the picture it would have on the manual or something(you know, those cheesy drawings of the C64 instead of an actual photograph).

Really nice work.

if you want to soften up the shadows you can add in an area lamp those work very nicely. i have never seen one in real life but i dont think the keys were that glossy (or maybe that is just my keyboard right here)

It is perfect! I love it. Brings back over-priced memories. Can I make a cassette tape to match it?

A lot of people give lots of good advice here. Great critics! It is what keeps us going.

I am “old school”, with have a degree in advertising, and graphics, when real air-brushing was the top-notch way of touching up images and photos. 99% of anything you see advertised (except for food that is being sold and subject to applicable laws) is touched up and fixed in one way or another.

The customer, and/or boss always want their product to look perfect. The photographs are never clean enough to put in a magazine.

But here in this Internet world of Blender, the “products are too clean”, and too perfect.

-Just an interesting thought I have

Thank you Spin, as a matter of fact I am planning to model the C2N datasette to go with it, maybe even the 1541 disk drive as well. Note to self: stop living in the past…

Here’s the latest render, slight improvements to the overall lighting and added the metallic effect to the badge (although you can’t bloody see it).

turn on ambient occlusion. there is a noticeable lack of indirect lighting necessary for realism.

modeling looks good, i think the bumps in the plastic may not be accurate. scale down the noise and reduce the nor value.

the plastics should have a very very small (almost imperceptible) degree of reflectivity.

the keys look a touch too rounded, but it’s been many many years since my c64, so i could be wrong about this.

Hey I have the whole set…Computer, 2 floppy drives, Cassete tape drive, Printer, Monitor, and a 256K memory expansion. Not to mention the original manual.

Kinda sweet picture, I like.

D’oh! The texture in the original render was very subtle, I increased it when a user commented that it was in fact absent. I suppose you can’t please everyone!

You are correct; the keys are a little too rounded and I’m aware of this. However, I feel they are fairly accurate and bearing in mind how long each row took (they are all different shapes, there are other renders of C64s that look wrong because the artist hasn’t taken this into account) I’m satisfied with the result. The key tops needed to be just a little bit larger, but I found a render done by a guy in Germany of a C64 where the keys were too ‘bucket-like’ so I’m loathed to remodel them in case I get the same effect.

someday i’ll model a zx spectrum…

That’s my next project.

Perhaps we could have a head-to-head?

hey I remember a little joystick with it? (really small , its about as thick as your finger) Or maybe that was unofficial

Looks great! i never had C64, i bought the C128 when it came on the market…and i still have it. But some strange reason it wouldn’t start when i last time in 2000 tried it…well those times were good, the games really were games not like today’s games, really sweet lookin grpahics but the story is so F*ed up ( of course there are few good games  ).

Yeah, the keys look a little rounded and they are kinda shiny.
