Its not blender but...

I was bored, i built this in a program called Sketchup, its great for speedy rough work, it even exports to DXF which im told blender opens (but mine wont for some reason)

Cool. Simple and elegant

I checked the SketchUp site and they claim that its simple enough for hobbyists and beginners…If your not serious about doing 3D work, then why would you have 400 bucks laying around for software that you will use once in a while!!!

I dunno, i barely ever use it. The demo has nag-mode so i fed it a serial# to make it shut up.

If youre having probs opening DXFs, it might be because you are trying to append them instead of opening them. open them as if you were opening a new blend file. (F1) blender will know what to do.

It’s probly just because my computer’s crap, but whenever I try to open one, it locks up.

Nice, but don’t tell everyone you fed the app a serial you found off the net somewhere.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Yea! because mabey the SketchUp police will come haul you away to 3D jail. Jeez, LOL…

The NDN…

Blender seems to have a little trouble digesting “DXF” files,

so the next time you goto open one:

  1. goto “F1” and load the file

  2. go get your self some coffee

  3. come back and watch your hard drive light on your
box,if it blinks every once in a while ,blenders still working

    it may take awhile!

whatever about the “sketchup police”, i dont think the elysiun admin would take kindly to talk of serials, cracks and the like on the forums,

about the loading of dxf files, i use truespace 3 with blender and blender takes ages to load some dxf files, so i save the mesh in parts and load it piece by piece into blender, never had anything out of place after loading so far.

Yup, DXF import, even on a powerful system, can take quite some time. Just be patient. If you are running WinXP or Win2K you can open up the task manager, as long as your CPU is pegged at 100% Blender is working. If it drops to idle for more than a few mintues and Blender isn’t responding it’s probably crashed.

ALWAYS go into edit mode and do “remove doubles” after an import.

I see nothing wrong with a person “pirating” software for educational purposes. [!] [!]

How else does the world expect many many, poor, talented people to learn these $10,000 programs?? Yes, there are lots of these companies that offer a “educational edition”, or a demo package… But even a lot of the educational editions are too expensive for my college-life-tastes. Hell, even the cheapest 3d package out there, Cinema 4d, still is priced at (or used to be atleast) $400! And the demo packages tend to be very limited.

With all that said… I think the program looks neat, and it would be fun to play around with. I too have trouble importing dxf files into blender sometimes. And when i do, i seem to never be allowed to smooth the faces.

Try removing doubles.
