Wow… Thats crazy, the animation was nuts, I’d say try an IPO curve, but then again I know almost nothing about animating in blender.
The animated one seems to be made by exporting many ivy meshes, and then blended frames to have the illusion of the ivy growing …
You could also try the build modifier on it.
The video you have posted looks more like a masked fade in, however.

I could just be that the whole ivy is grown and created just like in the tutorial, however he may have something masking several of vines and animated the leaves separately in groups.
I’ll see if I can recreate it and give you a better ida of what I’m talking about.
