Jack and the beanstalk

This guy at my work keep push to know what sorta “art” i did so I gave in and showed him my sketch book and a few 3d renders. Then he wants todo a small movie, I do all the graphics and animation and he does the music. Problem is he has no concept of the process it takes. “If you can make it good enough to where I like it then we will do it”, so basicly he wants me to waste time creating scene’s and characters sketches/models/animation to see if its what he wants, then he’ll decide a yes or no. The only pay will be @ the selling point. I pointed out that there will need to be alteast sound effeects, but voice actors would defintly help, all these he missed. Plus he has no idea how long it takes to fully model/texture/rig/facial expressions just for one character.

But isn’t jack and beanstalk copywrited? Wont there need to be royalty pay to the author.

The only reason I am even considering is he gives me an adult face, just like the last guy I help out, he gave me the adult face to gain a freelance job, where else I would never be considered. But I am still faced with the want to help him or not.

I don’t think it’s copywrited as its a traditional piece of writing where the author has been dead for more than 100 years.

i’m of the impression that the Jack and the Beanstalk is a foreign folktale (Europe, i think), and is much more than a hundred years old. so, that could mean the story is open for anybody to use, as long as their publication of the story doesn’t infringe on other people’s rendition copyrights.

then again … i know Disney has made a rendition of the story before, so they may have bought copyrights on Jack, and would either charge a sharp price for use of the story, or sue the pants off you.

Disney can’t have bought the rights to it so thats ok. Foreign folktale for you guys across the pond, :stuck_out_tongue:  but there are versions from most European countries dating back 500+ years. It was the Grimm brothers who collected similar stories and compiled them.

I wouldnt do a project where you end up doing most of the work, and the other partner seems to offer little.

There always comes a moment in a man’s life when he realizes he can make less-experienced men produce money for him, simply by offering these less-experienced men a little money and experience.

This moment marks the transition from “MAN” to “MAN-ager”.

My advice: Don’t fall for it. You want to follow a leader, not a manager. If you can find someone who is willing to do the whole thing by themselves without you, is not a big talker, and seems to enjoy hard work, offer to work for this person IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise do your own thing.

If you want to get experience by yourself, you should make short animations and make them very good. Just keep pumping them out.

Thank you soooo much! AS much as I will hate saying no to him, I guess it for the best. No reason to push myself to hard for almost no reason.

Good choice

That effort would be put to good use elsewhere, like upping those low rates on your website so you can make a living off your design work.

I told him today lol…

Him " I want a full length feature animation with the quilty of pixar"

Me " you know how lomg pixar take to make a movie?"

Me “4-5 years, with dozens of people, So only me I take a lifetime”

Him “So, not like you have anything to lose”

Me “I will need more helping me I cant do it alone”

Him “Its not that you cant, you just need to focus”

Me “Okay you see that chicken and big sharp knife? Imagine try to cut that chicken at the same quilt with tweesers. Not only Do i not that the right tools, but the time to render that would take over a year. You would you not want to watch tv for a yeart becuase its busy recording sometime?”

Him “Ill buy what you need if you can get it done”

Me “Got atleast 20,000 USD”, like I said I would nee more help

Him “Why have someone else do something you can do youself?”

Me “I dont want to wait 20 years working on a project, I want reconition not money, And I wont hide my talents working on a project with a story line that has been played way too often? I need a benifit from this, besides are ytou willing to wait 20 years? You past 40, and no idea how much time you have left. Why would you want to wait 20 years to start a projecet”

Him “So its a no? =_= My dreams”

Me “Think of it like this, I will be spending/pushing 1000x more time then you would writing and adding music. Would you be willing to spend all that time knowing you only getting 50%?”

Him “So its off?”
Me "If you really want to start a production company, you need money or to start a lot smaller, you cant make a movie @ your first try. Look just write sometime that will last 15-20 mins and get 2 more people to help and I am in.

Him “why cant yuou do it yourself, why share profit that with people when you can do it your self, see where I am going?”

Me " Yeah no where, think about this, Time vs Money The time that 3 people take to make something rather then one will result in a better product (you can focus on your strengths) and it will be out faster so you gert money faster. A production, you will be you own boss, but unless you dont have anything under your belt, dont expect people to bend over backwards for you. You need reconition and leverage, which you lack. So start small, or not start at all."

Man I dont know how much more info he need to understand my position. Oh well. He said he want to try something with me… so I told him when he has a story Ill see on it.
