Japan Sword Scene

Hey everyone,

I have been out of office for three weeks and got back yesterday, right before I left I wanted to upload this but I didn’t have enough time for that and I wasn’t able to reply during this three weeks, therefore I upload this now with happiness!
I have been working on this project for 1 week, I recorded the first days when I did most of the work. This is a remake of a sword I modeled 8 months ago, you can see it here:

now it has gone a year since I started with blender! I thought it was gonna be fun to see how much better I have gotten during this time!
After I had modeled the sword, I started making a room for it because it would be nice if the sharp ends could reflect something, it would look more realistic and it would be more fun! I hope you like the results as much as I do!

Final renders:

2k res - 3k samples (I’m not completely sure about the samples because it was a month ago I rendered this and I forgot to write it up)

2k res - 300 samples

2k res - 500 samples (not completely sure here either)

High (4k) resolution + rest of the renders link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gblomqvist/sets/72157635122747016/

Timelapse video:

I hope you enjoyed reading the post and maybe watched the video as well!
If you have any questions feel free to ask them!
What do you think?

Any feedback/critique? I know the title isn’t really attractive but I can’t change it.

Please, someone!

The only criticism I can come up with is that the render is very dark. Timelapses are great, thanks for taking the time!

PS: Your link at the top where you say “This is a remake of a sword I modeled 8 months ago, you can see it here:” goes to an Andrew Price video.

I loved watching the timelapse, but it was too bad you didn’t reveal the paper lantern materials / or compositing :p.

Overall the sword looks good but, like Zackaggs said, the first picture is REALLY dark. I liked the room more when it was brighter like in the timelapse video.

For a sword the size of a bamboo plant, though, I’d expect the hilt to be longer to hold with two hands (unless this is Final Fantasy 7 / fantasy oriented).

Anyway cool concept with the giant sword.

Zaskaggs, thanks for pointing that out, the link is fixed now!

Composite node tree:

Lamp shades node tree (outer mat, the brighter bigger mat):

Lamp shades node tree (inner mat, the darker small stripes mat):

The lamp shades node trees are almost identical for the two materials used on the shades, it just got different colors and the inner mat isn’t really transparent.

On the next project I will focus more on the light and scale in the scene.
If you have any more questions, just ask.

Thanks!

I saw the images didn’t show up in the last post, now I fixed it!

I was recently visited in York in the UK. There was a shop there called the Armory, which did swords and stuff. The had a full size version (almost my height) of a sword just like that. Normally when you see these with cos players I imagine they are foam for the weight, but this one was metal. It was very heavy, and clearly very impractical, but at the same time very cool looking.

Oh, that was interesting! Maybe my sword isn’t that unrealistic then.
