Jazz music video with open source

Greetings,

I’ve spent this last year trying to switch to an all opensource
production pipeline and this is my first project with it!
The project is a music video for a jazz band called “Off the Cuff”.

You can see it here:
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?p=off+the+cuff&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&b=9&oid=73e104fc0faf2f52&rurl=video.yahoo.com&vdone=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fvideo%3Fp%3Doff%2Bthe%2Bcuff%26toggle%3D1%26cop%3Dmss%26ei%3DUTF-8

The project was majorly rushed so I only had 1 week (evenings after
work) to get it done . Also the footage was only shot one time through,
so there are alot of lip sink and chroma key errors :(.
Ran out of time and made alot of mistakes but learned alot!
The following projects were used for the production:

Debian linux - operating system
Blender - 3D intro/exit/background and footage rotoscoping.
Cinelerra - video mix, composite and effects.
Kino - video capture and final mp3 export.
Audacity - sound effect editing.
Gimp - texture and title work.
Inkscape - title work, base shapes for 3D extrusion.

Also used 10 node linux renderfarm cluster for cinelerra and blender.
As far as I know only the music was done proprietary (pro tools I think).
I know its got alot of problems but it was produced with open source
projects which I think is Very Cool

i luv the nice old feeling to this.Good work mayn!but lacks a bit of blender 3d to be in the forum. But who cares i luv it!!!

Hmm, I assume the opening “building” is Blender ?

I don’t see any other “3d” in the video (were the two guys … who just stand there in the background … … composited in?

I really like the music, but frankly, the video is pretty boring. I appreciate you worked hard on it, and probably just produced what the band wanted. I guess they didn’t want any of that “fancy 3d stuff”

Hey guys,

Thanks for the comments.
Everything in the background is 3D (tables, chairs, pool tables, neon light, ect…)
granted you cant see much of it because of the close video footage. Also all the background
motion was rotoscoped with the film plate. As for it not having enough 3D for this forum,
over half of it is 3D composite with over 4 minutes of rendering. We just decided not to
“present” it as 3D but to set it up natural. Anyway sorry its borring but there wasnt enough
time to do anything more grand :frowning: .

Uh, well I couldn’t see any of them (tables, chairs …pool tables), except the lights  (Good job on tthose though  )

If you went to all that effort of modelling / setting them up, it might have been a good idea to vary/move the camera so that they could be seen

Now that you explain what was done, that’s pretty cool, setting up a “virtual” set.

The main thing that makes it boring is 90% of the time or more, the camera is just sitting there stationary in front of the singer.

Don’t take my comments personally, as I said I appreciate your effort.

If it’s any consoloation, the recent 3d movie “The Wild”, is visually stunning, has all kinds of great effects, yet it still bombed at the box office and has received heavy criticism for the story , kinda similar to what I’m criticising here (i.e. the directorial decisions made, not the technical execution).

They’ve got the groove on! Good music mix. Would have liked to see the lead guitar do his thang. She needs to lose the glasses on stage.
