Just curious! Let’s make a list!
Department of Defense and branches of the military use 3d for training. In many cases it is used to simulate situations or conditions that are hard to understand from a normal perspective or dangerous to recreate.
They also use it to design stuff (from nuts and bolts up to Ships and more)
in Australia they have athlete training facilities and have very photorealistic interactive 3d models of sports and stuff
Researchers in High Energy Particle Physics use 3d programs for both data visualization and for simulations to determine how to set up the experiments they will run and what the possible results might be. 3d CAD programs are also used in designing experimental equipment.

I use it as a Chemist to mock up analytical equipment and test apparatus for method documentation.
Animation studios use 3D software to create and animate characters and the worlds they live in.
Local headstone manufacturers - I kid you not. They have been looking for at employee for a few months now, it says “must be fit - head lifting required”, and “3D software training provided for the right candidate”. Well . . …
Tabletop wargames use 3d software (along with toy companies) to design action figures, models, figurines, etc.
Toy companies, advertising companies, medical advertisement (big one), educational videos, product design, concept work, feature film, television, the list goes on and on.
The company I’m employed at does patient educational software for eye doctors. So they use 3D to make movies illustrating various eye diseases and treatments.
video game companies use 3D for games…
Mechanical Engineering - all design specialties - piping, electrical, civil
Architecture - all design through blueprinting
Gaming Industry - videos, ads, game status displays
Products Industry - product visioning
Social Networking - check out Kaneva and Second Life
btw, yes, porn.
