Joining meshes

I have a uv mapped body and a uv mapped head but if i join them i lose the uv map on the one. How can i join the meshes while maintaining both uv sets?

you could join the uv maps by making two object materials with the uv maps and joining the objects together, after that, if the uv maps overlap, try separating them with the shortcut

Don’t understand what you mean each mesh already has a material . Here are some pics of what occurs

This first image is the body and head seperate as you can see body is mapped to the image

This is after joining selected the body mesh does nothing it is as if blender completely ignores the fact i have selected it.

Here i selected the whole combined mesh as you can see only the head section shows up.

So what do i do?
