Jump - first try at char anim

Here’s my first try at character body animation. The modeling was done in Wings, everything else with Blender. This is just a test for a combat scene I plan to make of two aliens in a martial arts fight. The AVI is encoded with DivX 5.0.3.

hey it’s a nice jump, I like the use of the arms being throw in the air…

seeming I am replying I may aswell offer some crit to be useful… don’t go for everything I say and wait for the experienced… but I noticed some odd foldings in the waist and knee’s… the waist being halfway through the air he seems to expand out like normal then squeeze back in as he lands… and the knees seem to deflate like they’re not solid enough…

you might of spotted these anyway… someone can tell you how to improve/fix this though if you’re wondering…

Thanks for the comments, that’s exactly what I was looking for. I uploaded an update with some corrections to the hips and knees. There’s now some clipping of the leg polygons, but IMO it’s less a problem than the previous deformations. Also I increased the resolution to 640x480.

The only other thing I’d change is maybe to have his shoulders slump slightly when he lands. As it is right now there’s no bounce to his landing above his waist. The legs absorb the impact and at that point he’s already rotating his torso before the animation of the landing is finished. If he’s coming down that hard you should have his upper body flex with the impact as well. That model is VERY cool and so far your animation rocks. I can’t wait to see what you have in mind for this thing.

In addition to what the other people said, he needs more anticipation at the beginning. For such a big jump he should be crouching down a lot more first.

Hopefully this is the final update. I’m pretty satisfied with the results and I think I got a grasp (at least a begginer’s one) of Blender’s char rigging/animation system. I corrected the starting crouch and the landing. I also got rid of the camera movement because it masked some errors in the char animation.
Thanks for all your replies. They very really, REALLY helpful.

O.K. I had to make another update  I was tired and it was late when I uploaded the previous one and I though it was finally good, but this morning I saw that the landing part happened too fast and the ground hit was still too soft. So, my FINAL update  Once again, thanks everybody.

Previously I uploaded an older version of the anim, instead of the most recent one :expressionless: (mental note: do not upload any files before you drink your morning coffee) It’s corrected now. Sorry for the mistake.
