Just a warning about Blender Bros Tutorials

Had a very negative experience with Ryuu from there. Spent like $300 on their Ultimate Guide stuff, and when I had a question, because their video training was out of date and wasn’t sure how to proceed, he blew me off, then blamed me like I was the problem.
If he worked for me, I would have fired him on the spot!
In fact, after I privately confronted him about blowing me off, instead of taking a minute to actually address my question, he just banned me from their discord and refunded me (thankfully).
My full experience posted on TrustPilot: https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6a3493959031015b5759c175

Hi there and welcome to Blender Artists,
Thanks for letting everyone know about this, hopefully other users who are looking at that course will see this.

I did move your post, since Tutorials, Tips and Tricks is for sharing your own courses / tutorials.

It’s unfortunate that you had that experience with BlenderBros, but it doesn’t surprise me in the least.

If disputing the charge on your credit card is an option, I’d consider it.

ETA: Ah, it was refunded, good.. Words one misses at 2am when one should sleep instead of type.

@ptwaugh mentioned in their original post that they where refunded.

Hello and welcome here !

Yeah their tutorials are good but Ryuu is a notorious a**hole :

Not everyone has the same sense of humor, but to me it says a lot about who you’re dealing with… I didn’t take time to dig all the problematic comments he made but there is a lot of them since a long time.

Thanks for posting this. I’m a psychologist by education—practiced a few years before going back into law enforcement until I retired—and he actually gaslighted me. I was stunned, as that’s the behavior of a textbook narcissist! I should have trusted my gut after watching one of his YouTube videos—something was off, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
Such a shame, because their Blender tools really do seem to be top dog. I posted a link where his partner Jason would see it, though he probably already knows given what you posted. I’ve turned to the manual now—it’s surprisingly good. Maybe I will find better here.

FWIW, not the first time BlenderBros has been a popped up as a “WTF with these guys”.

https://blenderartists.org/t/is-this-guy-right-about-blenderbros/

Consider yourself lucky to just be out of their bro-sphere.

Also, welcome to the forum.

Yeah, indeed it’s sad as their content could be actually helpful…
Besides they are not the only well known blender tutor with skeletons in their closets… Then it’s about the philosophical debate of how much should we keep learning from those or should we completely stay out of it…

Anyway, welcome to the forum, it’s a great addition to reading the manual, following youtube channels and other ways of learning and communication around blender !

There are channels worth learning from with good people behind, and unless you need something very specific, there is already a lot to do with what’s available. But courses can help to learn faster for sure !

Have fun !

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: Be very skeptical of anyone who identifies as a “Bro”, a “Guru” or a “Master”

Unless you are shopping for a cult, that is.

Well, there are no skeletons in my closet… hmm, wait, I’m not a well known Blender tutor… yeah, OK, never-mind, moving on…

Hahahaha well, I had someone particular in my mind, and there is a clue in @SterlingRoth last answer !

At the end of the day, we all have diverging opinions and that’s generally fine…
Just sometimes, as @ptwaugh said, you may have a hint that something doesn’t click to eventually find out what people have really on their mind beside blender.

It’s a bit problematic since they are representing blender in some ways. Blender Bros has blender in their name. Even though their mentality seems very different from people actually making blender…

In practice this isn’t really an issue, since they are not blender officials , but still they decided to sell themselves as Blender Something… they should be a bit more careful when they state their opinions then… IMO…

Actually, as part of his rage, he said, “We’re done here”, then immediately banned me from their Discord server, and refunded my money. So no problem there.

I sort of realize now that while I was wanting to buy a fun way to learn from a follow along project in the new Plasticity, what he was selling was his artistic (overestimated) modeling skills. In fact, in the very first tutorial, I thought “not how I would approach ths at all”, having 3DSMax experience. But, I thought we’ll maybe he’s staring out slow.

Anyway, not at all what I wanted to buy. Turns out the manual is nice, so I’ll use that, and as my fun project, I’ll just recreate the Star Trek Enterprise which I modeled in 3DSMax.

Hm, actually… Blender Market had to change the name due to trademarks IIRC. Aren’t they also infringing on Blender’s Foundation IP?

That’s an interesting point but I don’t know the legal implication. I guess if it’s just a name you’re fine, if it’s more a brand there might be some issue.

I won’t lie, that would probably make my day even if I generally don’t enjoy other’s troubles…

Maybe also Blender Bros is still small and not worth the legal investment in making stuff right… IDK but I’m curious !

It’s not just a name, it’s a whole brand, LLC company registered in Florida, website, online presence etc.

Probably this, but IIRC with trademarks if you don’t pro actively go protecting it, you might loose it (I’m not a lawyer tho).

Hum !! Now that I think about it, blendermarket was there for a while before it became superhive. Maybe the problem was that it was so famous that it can be easily interpreted as the official blender market with some kind of affiliation with BF. Hence the need for a change of name…

Hopefully it’s not the case yet for Blender Bros … and maybe that’s why they could have kept their name until now…

Anyway, it’s not uncommon to have a dysfunctional brother , they represent that well in the blender family

I’m not sure they actually had to. I think it was more of a goodwill situation.

I think putting NASA’s logo on their website was a bit more of a risk.

Oh, ew. The fact that he thinks it’s okay to act like that in public is wild to me. Dude clearly does not think highly of women or other minority groups; I definitely would not want to interact with a guy who behaves like this. Thanks for the warning! I’ll be sure to avoid them like the plague.
