just started getting the hang of particles yesterday (well i had a few failed attempts before and got scared away by all the numbers and buttons)

Very Nice, care to share the settings you used. It seems whenever I use grass, (the blender particles kind), I have to play around quite a bit to get anywhere the results I would like, and I am never really happy with the results.
alrighty.
firstly theres two layers of grass. the 2nd layer is more “shrubby”, a higher amount, spread out more, a bit shorter and hangs downwards when compared to the 1st layer. theres also a simple extruded plane for the soil which is the tiniest bit above the two grass planes.
argh too much typing to be done for such a lazy person. a .blend speaks a thousand words.
