Just an idea...

Hey all,

A while back, i had my first endevour (and only) into using the game engine, and of course it was a Star Trek game. hehe

http://www.stormpages.com/bapsis/trek_game.html

Since i frequent the official Star Trek website, i happen to know they have s#hit crap games to play on their site, where as newer franchises such as Harry Potter have full on 3D games on their site.

It would be cool to have a few guys band together to make a simple game to offer them for their site, which would most definatly help promote Blender to millions more people since they would have to down load the web plug-in.

Now since i cant do much more than make a very simple game, i was wondering if there were any trek fan / game blender users who might think this is a good idea and might want to give me a hand. Or even a non trek fan gameblender guru who would like to see Blender severly promoted!!!

Anywayz, was just a thought…

Matt

Blend on, and blend well!!!

(:open_mouth: I sit in front of my computer in dumbstruck awe… the work of many Blenderheads, on the Star Trek website… it’s just too wonderful…

wow

I’m behind ya!

Awesome, thanks PP!!!

What i was thinking of doing is having a flight sim / battle, which leads to a first person shooter level.

The mission should be pretty simple, you “discover” something while in the ship, go to a planet to investigate and possibly rescue someone (first person shooter).

Having both a flight sim and a first person level shooter would expand the game and make it feel larger.

I will start working on the models, i had infact thought of using the NX-01 since its ST’s latest reincarnation and current, what do you think PP?

I know that ST might say that they dont want it or cant use it, but i dont see them turning down a decelty developed web game handed to them freely, considering how much a company would have to pay to have something like that developed. As well as i know Blender can make games that are 10 times better than the ones currently on the site. And who knows, if they really like them they may “hire” us to make more content…

But that is just all speculation and best wishes…

So, i figured it couldnt hurt to try, i’ll start modeling the NX-01 all low polly and see if i can come up with a mission to follow in the next few days.

PP, write me an email or post here any ideas you have, or screenshots of, or games you have done so i can get a feel for your talents and skillz. And thank you for offereing to help!!!

hmm…thousands of new people playing a game with on blender, possibly company support, plus our tons of people seeing our name…hmmmm…SOUNDS GREAT!. just make that when u finish it you post it here first so u can get tons of people to help with any errors and bugs

Though i must warn you, if you make a really crappy game, tons of people will see it and think blender will suck.but i don’t think that’ll happen too bad (or else)

if you have any prob. (DON’T ASK ME!) just remove that part of the game and continue on!

snowy

That is a for sure, any good game needs a beta test!!!

Absolutly!!! That is most definatly the reason why i’m trying to elist some help from people who are more familiar with the game engine than me.
I’m positive that i can do the modeling and most of the texturing myself, and possibly some simple game logic like my first ship game (fly, shoot, warp).
But to make something that will not only get accepted, but give Blender huge by large exposure to many more millions, i will most definatly need some help with people who are far more experienced than i with game logic.

I really think this could work, so if any game guru’s (i can think of a few who i hope post here!!! ) want to give this a shot i say bring it on!!! I mean really, who wouldn’t like to see a Blender game and the web plugin hosted at http://www.startrek.com , i reckon its worth a shot!!!

And i know its just a matter of turning out a product that the powers that be over there go “s#hit, this is awesome, we gotta host this, you say they are giving it to us for free???”

Would be hYpE!!!

Personally, I’ve never seen an episode of “Enterprise” :expressionless: , so I’m not real familiar with that ship, except that I’ve seen some pictures of it on the webpage. Personally, my favorite ship is Picard’s, and I like the way Voyager looks, too. I actually have modeled Kirk’s ship once before, it’s an easter egg in my game. I love easter eggs. Anyway, this all sounds great. I was about to make a space game anyway, though not a Star Trek one (“Hey, you copyright infringer! It’s off to jail wit’ you!”)

Sounds great guys.

Haven’t you always wanted to fly one of those mini-ships, too? What use they are if you’ve got transporters, I haven’t the slightest idea, but oh well! They’re cool anyway, and they look fun to fly.

Shuttlecraft? I think i would still prefere that to transporting!!! I too like the Voyager design, but i do think it looks a little like a upsidedown spoon in shape!!! hehe

Anyway, i will post more when i finish the model of the NX-01 done or have any other ideas that come to mind!!!

Matt

yeh, shuttlecraft! I remembered what they were called last night! &-P duh. All sounds good, but I must admit… I have a REALLY slow connection…it takes me about two minutes to download a megabyte… so I won’t be the one submitting the finished file… I can probably send models and textures pretty easily though. Just not exe’s. (Why are the exe files so big, anyway? An empty file is still like 1.63 meg!!!)
Saw the NX-01 at the Star Trek website, it looks pretty good (though I must admit, I think it’s uglier than Voyager or Picard’s Enterprise. I guess it’s cooler than the original.)

How about putting Q in the game somehow? I like the Q. They’re…bratty. I also really like the Bynars (they were in an early TNG episode called like 101010010 or something like that.) Check the website. They’re cool.

Keep in touch!

The .exe’s are big because they have to pack blender in with them.

Use compressed blender files, then use .zip or .rar compression (.rar is better) and you can limit the size substantially.

I acctually like the ship design, it still looks trekish but fits the time period of like 300 years before Picards time. I also like that they gave it lesser weapons and sheilding technology, they have missles and can only “polarize” the ships hull.
I appreciate your ideas PP, but Q dosent come into the picture for another 300 years, tho they are breaking other continuity rules. For example they have a Borg episode comming up, even tho it was Picard who made first contact with them, but they have explained this with the TNG movie “First Contact”. Part of the Borg sphere they shot down at the begining of the movie is discoverd by scientists who get assimilated. But anywayz…
I’m still working on the model, of course the most difficult part would be the texturing. I have modeled it before in high-polly ( http://www.stormpages.com/bapsis/ent.html ). I dont have a .blend of this ship on my computer, but hopefully my GF still does cause the CD she burnt it on is corrupt.
So im goign to get her to send me a copy and use it for reference and possibly even for textures. The textures on the high-polly were all mesh and not jpgs, so i may as well use all that hard work!!! hehe

Definatly keep your ideas comming, and if anyone else would like to help out it would be greatly appreciated. This isnt going to be a huge by large project, just a small little game to demonstrate Blenders game capabilities and be just a “fun little thing” to play!!! I doubt development would go over 1-2 months if i really work hard at it.

Anywayz…

Kind of reminds me of an old Star Trek game… i don’t remember what it was called, but there were flight sim parts and then an adventure part.

Pooba

Looks cool! I am amazed by your model… maybe you could take pictures of it and use them as textures. That would work, I think. I didn’t realize that the NX-01 was before Picard’s time. That explains it. I like it better now. Wher’d you get those excellent planet textures?
Yeah, I didn’t really think that the Q could work out. Arg, now they’ll probably be appearing any second and forcing us to put them into the game. It would be cool to put Klingons in it, though. I like their big green ships.

From Star Trek V, The Final Frontier:

Kirk, McCoy, and Spock are camping in the wilderness:

Spock: I have been researching the customs associated with “camping out”.
Spock brings out a tube and removes a small white object from it.

McCoy: Spock what are you doing?

Spock: I am preparing to roast a marshmallow.

McCoy: Oh, right. And what do we do after we roast the marshmallows, Spock?

Spock, surprised at McCoy’s ignorance: We consume them.

 Have fun guys!

Thats the plan, glad you like the model, tho its quite old and i had thought of doing a new high-polly one a little while back, just to see how realistic i could get it since im much better at Blender now.

Klingons are a definate for sure, at this time period humans and klingons are just getting to know eachother, and have had a few little fights with them (even tho Archer saved their butts a few times)!!! I too like the design of the klingon ships, so i will definatly try to find some blueprints from an old klingon ship (proper timeline era) and try to make a low polly one as well!!!

It looks like you’re going to have to tell me what you want me to make. I have no idea what Enterprise is about or anything. I’ve make some pretty c   l textures using Gimp, so maybe I could do that. I’ve also made some pretty good asteroids and planets. You get a really coold effect with alpha channel clouds turning opposite of another cloudy texture on an inner sphere. Try it, if you know what I mean. If you don’t I’ll make an example.

Hey PP,

Sorry, i’m still waiting on my GF to send my old model so i can use the textures.
What i’ll do is send you the ship once i get it up and manouverable, then we’ll have to think of scenerios for it to be used. For example, for one of the first parts of the game, to get the hang of flying the ship i wanted to fly it through a wormhole that winds and twists, and perhaps you have to race something behind you, like it closing or a huge plasma fire ball, so you cant mess up and hit the edges and are forced to fly a perfect or near perfect level.

If you like you could try to make a wormhole type tunnel and see if you can get the (cloud?) texture to animate, i was thinking light blue to white for the colours, but feel free to try something else if you think it will work.

I could also get the ship up and running with out the textures for now i suppose, how good are you at texturing game models? When i get the .blend of the ent i did we’ll start taking images and cutting them up for the game model.

Anywayz, sorry this is off to a slow start, im just re-wariming back up to project mode!!! hehe

Will either post here soon or PM you, thanks again for your offer to help!!!

How good am I at texturing game models? I can usually do a pretty good job if I’m not rushed. I’ll start work right away on the wormhole. What should be at the end? A planet? Station? Klingons? (Horrors! We might as well have hit that fireball!!!)

Heya PP,

Tell you what, after you make a nice long wormhole, have the last section “end” into a HUGE sphere, so you have lots of area, with a texture of stars and nebula, a space room.
And inside that sphere, put a much smaller sphere (of course MUCH larger than the tunnel openings tho), which will be a planet.

I will model a cargo/transport like looking ship to “orbit” the planet, which the NX-01 will have to protect from 2 smaller battle ships (Suliban Pods?) for the second challenge.

I do want you to take your time with this, and your definatly not rushed because im not going to rush myself!!! I dont want to take too long to make it, but for just a few simple challenges and levels it wont be so hard to make game wise once all the modeling is finished. Especially if you (or some other kind soul) are better at game logic than i.

PP, we should hook up on IRC soon so i can send you the first trek ship game i was constructing. It’s like 9mbs tho, and i cant send it through email (webbased email only for me), but can send it to you DCC. It will give you a better idea of the manouvrablility and functions of what im aiming for. Just PM me if you see me on and we’ll hook up!!!

Anywayz…

Just thought i would update this topic here with some screenshots of the model and the textures i will be using…
