Just an idea...

Hey guys,
I have checked out the site here many times, but never signed up for the forums. So now I have, I wanna tell you guys a great idea:

I think the big 3D software companies should either give away, or sell really cheaply their older versions of their software. I can’t afford a copy of Lightwave or Maya, but I don’t need to have Maya 5, or Lightwave 7.5. I would be ecstatic to have a copy of Maya 3, or Lightwave 5. And this way the companies could build up a larger amount of customers, who would be more likely to buy upgrade packages for the software.

Just a thought…
What do you think?

Hm, is it really a great idea ? %|

free version + upgrade package = full version

in dollar

0$ + a few $ = a few $ :frowning:

demo version + full version = full version

in dollar

0$ + a lot $$$$$$$$$$ = a lot $$$$$$$$$  :stuck_out_tongue:

Why should a company give away their older versions for free ?

For testing nearly all companies offer more or less restricted free demo versions.

Those users which can’t pay for the full version are not intersting for the companies.
Others that could would have a cheap way to get the full version and the companies would lose a lot money this way.

I believe truespace is doing something vaguely similar, they have version 3 somewhere for download.

actually i bet it would be more like
special free version + full version (alot $$$$$$$$$$) = *bling *bling

most likely companies would be like Alias (no its not Alias/Wavefront anymore) and hand out “Learning Editions” Avid has also done this and like Alias has done with Unreal Tournament 2003, Avid is putting it with the upcoming Half-Life 2(Sep 30, HA!)

Blender = FREE!

No need to get those high end apps if Blender keeps getting better and better every version.
