Wasted a fair amount of time with the panels. It dawned on me once I actually started thinking about it, that if this is some sort of prison, you wouldn’t have buttons and stuff on the walls, for anyone to come along and press. Especially in a prison orbiting in space…So I have made some changes, added some box panels things. We can pretend all of that stuff is still there, but behind paneling and hidden from plane site. Will add a few more bits and bobs, but much happier with it now, and the lighting too.
A quick test render. Happy with how it’s turned out so far. Think this corridor is pretty much done. Just got to model a door to go at either end.
Working on the Hooded variation of Kara. Who knew making a hood not look stupid would be so hard. This is where I’m at atm, and I think it looks ok. It’s attached to rig aswell, but there is some tweaking required there as expected.
A few more tests on Kara. Checking to see if the hood has the desired effect in low light. Provides shadow in the right places so happy.
Blocking out and beginning to detail the prison, which orbits earth. I have changed the design. originally looked much different to this, but when it came to trying to detail it, I realised I hadn’t really thought it through enough, so decided to start again with a new design. Including a rough sketch. I also wondered about whether prison cells on a space prison would have windows, and so i decided that some would some wouldn’t. It will all become clearer later on.

Some more progress on the prison. I don’t want to make it too detailed, but I want enough to provide interest and so that If i needed to move the camera close, you would see something other than a flat plane. Not too much left to do now. Just some details to add to the tower I think, and then think about materials etc…
Space prison almost complete now. Im more or less just going to mirror the top half of the tower on the bottom, and make a few adjustments. But this is almost there now, which is good. Spent longer on it than I thought I would, but Oh well.

A test…trying to work out how best to do planets to best suit my style. I think it looks ok. Feedback?
Looks pretty good, although I’m not sold on using Freestyle on the planet as it doesn’t look really natural. I think it might look better without outlines.
Nice…have you done some tests to saturate the color on the planet some, just to see? I love the color, it’s a nice contrast with the station, but just wondering if it would ‘fit’ better. Also, not sure how I missed the corridor and character updates above, but looks fantastic. I think the hood is awesome! The shadowy image is great also…shadow effects is something I haven’t been able to successfully incorporate into my scenes yet, but really want to.
Thanks. Nope not tried messing with saturation yet, will give it a go and see how it looks. I did a little color balancing on the station, adding a hint of blue which I think worked pretty well. And yeah I was quite pleased with the dark image test I did. The opening few pages will be quite dark (in lighting terms) so important to get the lighting right.
Another Update - Started working on the guards. These will be used at the prison, and also later on, as in story terms, their armor is pretty standard, so you will see many people throughout story wearing similar armor with variations.
Near enough finished blocking out now. Starting to add detail to the base layer as you can probably see. Helmet is not a final design. Will probably change the whole thing.
A few very rough and awful sketches for potential helmet design. I put loads of images I found of other helmets together and then used those for inspiration, combining bits I liked. Here are the 3 results. The middle one kinda accidentally turned into Darth vader Im liking 1st or 3rd one.
Edit: Also tweaked the earlier test image. Played with saturation as suggested, and also increased light on station to better match planet.
nice…they all look pretty cool to me, but I’m kind of digging the first one just because the mask thing seems more original and seems to bring an added dimension of threat - example makes one think of a bandit out for themselves and acting on their own and unpredictable…or not sure if I’m making any sense. Anyway, was wondering how you did these sketches? Photoshop? If so, do you use some sort of board to do it with? I haven’t yet been able to make the transfer from paper sketches to electronic, but would like to at some point…
Hey, Yeah I like the first one. I don’t want things to look crazy futuristic. I’m trying to keep things somewhat human, if that makes sense. So first one definitely fits that. And yeah, I use a Wacom Intuos tablet. Nothing fancy, it’s the small one. They’ve released a newer version of it recently, about £50 or so. So maybe $51 in today’s market
