Kara - Graphic Novel/Comic - Chapter 1 - Pilot

Guard rig now complete. (pretty much). Added lots of extra bones to tweak parts of the armor individually. Seems to be working well. And no poke through on clothing meshes! Need to model a gun for the guards now.

Done some work over the weekend on the gun for the guards. Not entirely happy with it. Seems too bulky, but it’s actually quite hard to find dimensions for guns (seems to be anyway) so it’s mostly guesswork…

I remodeled the gun. Much happier with it. Also, posing the guard was more difficult than I thought, need to make sure I use plenty of reference when doing final poses. Noticed a few issues with rig aswell, but nothing too hard to fix.

Whats happening here then? Hmmmm…Early wip. Damaging, or more so, blowing them up is quite the challenge. Also not sure what to do with debris, as it’s space, and my limited knowledge of space and vaccums says that all of the contents of the inside of that rooms would shoot out of the station…right? But as I say, early wip. Lighting needs to be sorted too…

Some more work on the damaged cell. Looking much better now. Colors are a bit dull. Tried to tweak a few bits in post, which have improved it. But overall, looking better.

Pretty big change. I decided to re-design Kara’s ship. Not matter what I did with the model I just wasn’t happy with it. I don’t think it really matches the style of everything else either. So, I did a rough sketch, which I used as a guide whilst modelling. This is where I’m at with it atm. Got the shape down, and now adding details. My only concern atm is that it looks quite similar to other things I’ve seen. I did draw it from the top of my head, didn’t use any references this time round, and this is what I’ve come up with.

Looking great! I love the definition on your characters…you are doing great things with freestyle. What is your publishing goal for the graphic novel? Would be great to see it when it’s finished. For mine, I plan on publishing it through Amazon in both printed and electronic formats.

Not sure yet. I thought maybe I would release the first chapter for free, and then see how much attention it receives, and then work on the rest. Im on month 3 of working on this so far (excluding previous story development etc…) So it’s likely to take some time to finish the rest of it. I aim for around 10 chapters or so, but I need to work that out. May end up being less, may end up being more. After probably chapter 2 or 3, all of the main characters will have been added, so it will be a case of environments and additional costumes etc…so that will save time, and it should speed up a bit. But I may look into Amazon distribution.

Had to stop for a bit, my hand is killing me from adding edge loops to panels lol
This is where I’m at. Panels taking a while. But done them separate object to the ship, which I have forgotten to do in the past…I’ve never really modeled a spaceship mind though mind…

Ship almost done now. Will probably add some more details on the side and stuff. Likely to change color too.

Right ship more or less done. I will probably use some freestyle edges to fake panels underneath. Was going to model landing legs, but I realised I don’t need them for this chapter, so will come back at a later date to get that finished. But this is now complete enough for the first chapter. Apart from maybe s few details on the rear. But that won’t take long.

Been quiet for a few days. Been working on the corridors in the prison once more. Made some changes, and have started adding wings, now I know for Certain the layout. Here’s a really dirty render. Need to fix some freestyle stuff with it. Also a screen shot of the layout of the floor. The corridor in the middle is the main access point, which I was working on previously. At either end of that is a wide, long corridoor, and then coming off of that are smaller ones where the prison cells are located. I also added a lift in the middle of the original corridor.

For the most part, most of the modelling is now done. I did break my PC the other day trying to render something, but it was because I forgot to tell freestyle not to draw lines on the mesh walkways I had made, and so it completely crashed my PC. I’m saving for a new PC anyway, so hopefully I can have a bit more power in the not so distant future. So I can’t really show you that rendered, but I’ve added some screen shots. Got a long corridor, with doorways leading to cells. 2 floors, walkway goes to each one. May refine a few bits there, but it should be good as is really.

And finally, worked on a rough idea for the front cover. Actually quite like this, so may keep it as is, even if it did take 5 mins. Hopefully can start actually rendering pages after xmas. Probably a few more bits to works on along the way. But will be good to get it moving forward again, and start closing this chapter of the story out.

Cover looks great. I would prefer to contrast either the character OR the background in a different shade or color, but that’s just my preference. This cover stands out.

I’m back! I have my new PC all set up now, so I can render things a lot easier now, and quicker. For the most part, modelling and everything for chapter one complete. I can now start putting some of the pages together. There are a few more little things to do, but can do those when I get to them. For now, here is a draft of the first page. Not 100% happy with lighting of top part, will probably come back to it at some point. I won’t be uploading whole pages as updates in the future, just some selected renders. But I’m hoping I can have a 1st draft of Chapter 1 rendered and put together (minus lettering) within a couple of weeks. Also, you can’t really tell, but I redid Karas rig, now I have worked out weight transfer, which has worked so well on other models. Arm straps have also returned, previously removed because I couldn’t work out how to rig them properly, but weight transfer to the rescue!

Kara’s had enough of Jim’s shit…It’s fun to move the bones about and create poses. I find myself sat at my desk doing the poses myself to see what bones move, and where things sit etc…its a fun process.

haha…facepalm…looking great!

^^In the second panel, a single eyebrow raise would make the surprised expression stand out more if you were going for the “wtf is wrong with you, Jim” kind of face. Looks interesting, keep up the good work.

Sneaky Kara about to pop out of the air vent.
