Keep disabled objects in linked files from turnig back on

Hi guys,

I’ trying to render an environment around several linked buildings, each houses’ interiors are fully equipped and placed in a collection that I disable, since that bogs down my system incredibly, of course, and those items are irrelevant to the exterior scene.

But once imported in the exterior project, all disabled collections are enabled again. Do I have to create duplicate files and delete all interiors from those or is there another way to import with those collections disabled?

So … the house exteriors are one collection, and the house interiors are another, and the two collections are not nested? Just to clarify please.

The entire house is one collection, inside of which there is another collection containing all the furniture. The furniture collection is set to not render.
Do I have to move the furniture “outside” the house collection and import both as separate collections? Or is there a way to turn furniture off permanently and re-enable via editing the linked file?

You could Set the Furniture collection to unrenederable and disable it in the viewport. Not with the eye icon but with the little monitor icon. That way it will be linked but it will not bog down your viewport and it will not be renderend.

Also note that you can set instanced collection to “bounding box” in
properties panel → object properties → viewport display.
This is useful esspecially for things like background geo which usually do not need to see when working in the scene.

However:
Personally I would keep the furniture inside the house collection and place all the other stuff into other collections.

Inside the house collection you would then have:

  • Furniture
  • Geometry Interior
  • Geometry Exterior
  • Lights
  • and so on

Then in the file you want to link your house to, create a Collection called “House” and link all the Collections you need individually. That way you can easily turn stuff on and off for better viewport performance or to more easily place cameras, lights and things like that. And you can easily add stuff that you might need later on which you forgot to link or because the client gets interesting ideas half a day before your deadline ends.

Danke bestens, lieber Gnom.

OK, so I enabled the “disable viewport” button and check it out. To me, it always seemed like all those controls were set to default on linking!

Just let me rephrase to make sure my addled mind got this right:

  1. I do make a collection for the entire house, but not in the file I’m linking, but the file I’m linking to, and place all the subcollections referring to said house in there.
  2. I can then deactivate said elements and reactivate them (the little checkbox) to entirely remove/reload them.

At least, that would make most sense to me atm!

I’m working with Archipack Pro, so there is a given collection structure, but that shouldn’t matter.

On a sidenote: could it be possible the modifiers inside the linked files (5 houses in total) are slowing camera operation to .4-.7 fps? Viewport navigation is super fast, but camera animation (same view mode) incredibly slow…
