I just wanted to remind everyone on blenderartists forums to keep your games simple. To many games projects are so complicated that the person/team making it do not have the skill it takes to make it yet they think they do. My second point is, that not only do the people lack the ability, but Blender lacks the ability. The Blender GE is not designed for making next generation games or even games of this generation! I suggest looking at the classic best sellers from previous generations. The graphics were nothing amazing but they were still amazingly fun to play and they still are today! When you start a game project plan out every detail of gameplay (keep it simple!) then start making some low poly models with low res textures! If you stick to these gidelines you should be able to complete a game made with Blender that is really, really, fun (and thus popular) giving you all the Blender fame you ever dreamed of (no guarantees). I know I would love to see some PlayStation (yes, I mean PS1! Not 2 or 3!) quality games. Maybe somthing like spyro? Spyro is still one of my favorite games to this day even though the graphics suck. Look at Blender games like MGP and learn your lesson!
Feel free to comment! Any advice of your own anyone? Anything to add?
I totally agree, I also prefer (compared to an actual game) to play those sidescoller games or mini games, they rock!
If you are going to make a serious game though try out ogre, or even python-ogre at that.
OMG DID YOU SAY SPYRO? Are you a mind reader, seriously son… I’m making a spyro the dragon themed game for the game competition! I’m competiting in the game play category. The graphics are so/so but the game is coming along nicely!
Yeah, I agree. Pollycounts and special effects are amazing, but at the end of the day it’s gameplay that counts. That’s why some “classics” never seem to get old - they have such great gameplay!
I made a really simple ragdoll game (I mean extremely simple - only one object even had a texture!) where the entire point was to knock down the other character. Even though it only took me 30 minutes, my friends played it for hours and hours and still remember/ask me about it a year later. I actually made a revision with a bendy iphone using the new real-time softbody stuff.
Hi
I am wondering if my flight sim/game project goes to the ‘over complicated’ category with all those aerodynamics & physics calculations, but anyhow…
Cyborg_ar and Moguri are cleaning up the python API so you would need less bricks and the python would be more consistant so it’ll help with the logic part.
I’d say beginners shouldn’t try for games that would require years to complete even with the rapid-development allowed in the BGE.
