Your feathers look like they have a gradient. How do you arrange them like that?

I guess what you mean is achieved by the shape of the feather cards, the combing of the underlying hair system and the geo node setup that places the cards. Or, if you mean the gradient in colour, that’s done by textures.

First, I’m interested in how it’s all arranged.

I’ll do a breakdown of the feather setup at some point. For now, I’m really sorry but I don’t understand what exactly you want to know - can you be more specific? Or point to it on an image?

I want to know how to adjust the distribution of feathers across the model.

Ah. It’s controlled by blender’s new geo node based hair system. I broke the animal down into separate areas - head, neck, upper and lower body, and so on, for which i created seperate feather systems. For most of them I used two systems, one for longer and one for shorter feathers with different feather cards. I hand placed guide curves and combed them in the sculpt mode, then used the interpolate hair curves modifier to reach the final density. Special areas like around the eyes and the beak were masked out here with the mask option. Some manipulation of the interpolated curves was done with the default hair modifiers, then a feather card was placed on each curve.

The primary and secondary feathers and the coverts on the wings and the tail feathers were placed by hand.

Does this help?

Here is a breakdown of the feather systems on the head, if that’s of any help.

Thank you very much) And if you place the feathers along the curves using this script, will it simplify the task?Sorry for my English, I’m using Google Translate.

Feather script.rtf (8.9 KB)

I don’t fully understand what it’s supposed to do but from having a brief look into the script, it should work about the same as one of my geo node setups as shown below. With each click I place a new hair curve which gets replaced by a randomly selected feather card. Combing the hair system will re-orient the feather.

That’s correct, but my script can affect multiple guides at once. By the way, could you send me an scene with your geonodes? Dino no need.

No need anymore, I did it myself. Thanks for the help.

Amazing! You did a fantastic job!

I’ve come back to this topic now to marvel about these wonderful models and especially, insanely realistic feathers. Awesome job! I’d love to see a full breakdown of the feather creation process some day. Heck, I’d pay for a course!
