"Knife Tool" with "cut through" can't apply to Shrimpwrap on other objects

I followed the tutorial on YouTube to make a “Halo Helmet”. When I create a detail with “Knife Tool” on the “Visor” mesh, the mesh doesn’t change even though I’ve enabled “Cut Through”(the attached pic.1 captured from the tutorial, and the screen capture from mine is the attached pic. 2). Is anyone can tell me the reason or is there something I missed? Thanks.

Are you using the same modifier

This is what you’re trying to do, right?

Also, I’m sorry, but I can’t resist it. Shrimpwrap!

What exactly did not work ??

cutThrough

The flat visor mesh is shrinkwraped onto the surface and cut… there seems to be no further trials to make any “embossment” yet ? Matbe by selecting the line, bevel and move along Y ??

It should cut but watch out with the nasty nogons you will be creating. I would recommend using better topology before subdividing/shrinkwraping.

Also better to use project in the shrinkwrap rather than nearest surface.

Edit, just saw a bit of the video, he manually cleans it all up afterwards and uses a vertex group for the shrinkwrap.

Provided he’s only using a mirror and a shrinkwrap, and his origin is set to where his 3D cursor is located, he shouldn’t be having any problems with this. There’s no reason why his cuts shouldn’t be reflected onto the mirrored half. These are destructive, non-procedural cuts he’s making here.

That’s what’s so weird about this. Like oo said, I think we need to see his modifier stack. Also, a look at his outliner might not hurt too much either. He could be mirroring coplanar geometry or something.

That’s what i meant… i see no prblem yet. Also looking at the actual tutorial (always nice to have…)

Edit:

Also: in the tutorial and the example the Display modifier in Editmode is disabled… so nothing to see except the “cutting”.

In principle we dont. The knife tool editing the mesh in editmode is happening before anything in the modifier stack.

Yeah, you’re right. It couldn’t hurt to look at it, but the problem is almost definitely elsewhere.

The only reason I can think of as to why his cuts aren’t being reflected in the mirror would be because he accidentally made an extra duplicate of the visor mesh, and he’s mirroring that, while cutting on another mesh. Maybe?

…but you can still see the underlying geometry of the mirrored side.

Could he be using the mirror modifier to reflect changes on actual geometry? I didn’t know people could do that.

edit: turns out you can, but the changes aren’t shown unless you’re looking at the mesh in wireframe.

Yes。。。

Yeah, delete the geometry along the left half of your mirror line. That should fix your problem.

This is the proper way to use mirrors. The way you’re doing it technically works, but it could lead to a bunch of potential mesh issues, and possible confusion later on down the road, since it’s effectively generating extra geometry underneath your real geo (this is why I could see the changes while in wireframe, but not in solid).

Ohh yes… geometry on the mirrored side ( ?! ) at 2:11 the tutor deletes the left side in the view. So the right side of the helmet.

God, I’m hungry.

If the problem is that it looks different from the part shown, activate the wireframe in the display settings.
