Knit a Hat?

Trying to find a tutorial how to knit a Bobble Hat but not finding anything hopeful. I know it’s possible using curves but not the pattern I’m after. Type of knit below …

Do you want it to be all geometry?

Yes. I’ve tried subdivided geometry with a material but ended up using too much geometry.

Modeling knitted geometry is going to be pretty heavy no matter what way you do it.

Is there some reason you need to have the knit modeled? What is the end use for this hat?

The closest look for the knit is the McDonalds advert …

But a bobble hat, just can’t get the right height / curvature. Subdividing a mesh so many times doesn’t mean it will follow the way it should but thought actual geometry can be simplified. I think I might try Substance Designer.

Why not model the shape of the hat and apply a knit material? I can’t think of a reason to physically model the weave.

You could get by using a Tissue addon
On you is just to learn about and understand the pattern you’re after… at first looks i’d say it’s a braid type

Thanks I like the look of the Tissue Addon but not sure how I can create a knit pattern. Also the Stitching Meshes looks awesome but once again how do I use it ?

I did some experimenting a year ago with 2.79 using Curves, Surface Deform modifier and Hair Particles. Back then it was the most practical way I could find. The same result can be achieved with Sverchok. Take a look if you want:

I remember, splendid indeed  sorry that I forgot about it, tnx for reminding.
