i dont think ao gave the best effect; it makes him look glossy which is not what i wanted.
also, what i should have done was just rendered the background once and used nodes to put krober over the background layer…however i couldnt figure out how to do that.
there is an option to have an object only cast shadows, but there’s no option for the object to only show shadows cast on the object itself.
if there were that option (anybody know how i could do that?) then i could do a simple alpha over…
also, i wanted toon edges for the character and the stones in the background but not for the flower cuz it looked bad on that…
oh well. it was only a test. and i need to work on my animation skills…
Hmm, 16 megs ? … how long is the animation ? … what is the resolution and what codec did you use … if any ? (if it’s “AVI-RAW”) that would explain the large size. Quicktime/Sorenson 3 - medium quality usually gives decent sized files / quality.
If I wasn’t on dialup, I’d just download it right away
as for the resolution and codec, its 640x512 and its avi jpeg. ya think ao is what did it? i also had osa at 11…
finja - thanks! tho i prolly should work on projects that are a bit more manly
squareline - thanks, and wow how did i miss that??? i only saw the “OnlyCast” option…thanks again!
so i will def be using that on any more animations i do with a similar setup…that should also make the toonedges a no-brainer with a simple node setup.
osa, ao have no effect on file size (I think ;), it’s the codec , avi/jpeg, which is not very efficient.
Hmm, just watched it on YouTube … nice animation… I realize it’s just a test, but would be nice to hold the final pose for a few seconds.
… 5 SECONDS for 16megs ? even at 640x512  , something definetly not right there.

Try to use FFMPEG (new in the Windows version).
It works great, I only notice there is a nasty 1st frame bug in it.
I mean that when you open the animation and play it you’ll notice the first few frames are blurred with blocks, after that you wont notice anything.
My usual settings:
Format: AVI
Codec: MPEG4
Bitrate: 3000
Maxrate: 3000
anicator - ok, i didnt realize that had been added, thanks!
mmph! - thanks also. he’s just four subsurfed cubes…well the eyes make it 6. the material is a simple base color + cloud texture for color variation, cloud bump, and then a ramp shader over top to give it a white edge. (for anyone who’s interested - i’m pretty sure u already figured that out ;)).
Render time tip: To shorten rendertime use Image textures instead of procedural clouds.
You could render the procedural texture onto a plane with the Camera set to Orthograpic at a resolution of 256x256.
You can use that Image as your “Clouds” texture.
Your character is cute, it sorta reminds me of if the rock monster from galaxy quest had a cute little offspring
But, the animation is a little floaty.
I’m no pro, but I think you could benefit from going back to basics (as we all need to do from time to time). Work on making the most realistic bouncing ball you can and you will be surprised how the principles you learn apply to every other kind of animation. If you work in more ease in and out, it will give your character more weight.
