Lamps for Interior Scenes

Hi, just a question that sprung to mind today. If it’s blatantly obvious, bear with me, as I’m still quite new.

For indoor scenes (well, outdoor too I suppose, but mostly indoor), if you want to model a lamp, what would give the best result for the light: Modeling the lightbulb and placing a lamp object inside it, OR; modeling the lightbulb but giving the material emit?

First option for Blender render, second for Cycles.

If you’re not going to see the bulb in the scene, just model an elongated sphere as an emit object to get correct lighting coming from inside the lampshade.
