Laptops with RXT 3080 VRS PC with RTX3080 PRICE DIFFERENCE

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X Graphics Card is
$1,950.00 VRS
A laptop 15.6" FHD IPS Anti-Glare 240Hz, Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 16GB GDDR6, 32GB Memory, 1TB SSD, Win10 Home, Gaming Laptop
$2,200
Why would anyone buy a PC when you can get a laptop that will outperform it for less ? Anyone care to give an opinion on this ?

First off, mobile cards are way slower than regular ones and usually they have lesser vram.
And of course, thermals in notebooks are not as good as in a stationary pc.
Check for example OctaneBench to see what I mean.

Also, 3D rendering on a laptop is not recommended. Those thermals MarcelDeneuve mentioned will decrease the life of your laptop considerably.

The desktop Geforce is faster and you need to check the laptop TDP one, it should have 165w to have maximum power. Nevertheless you are right there is no sense in buying a sole 3080 at curent prices. Buy a whole desktop system or a laptop. The situation is even more glaring ins less powerful cards like 3060 and 3070 since even a laptop can extract more from them and you might find a 3060 laptop for 1000 euro.

It is usually better to get an external GPU for laptops for rendering.

You’re getting an RTX 3080 in name only.

This site is my goto for understanding the differences between CPUs and GPUs, as well as various drives. I’m not sure what the numbers mean, but higher is better (faster):

  1. GeForce RTX 3080 Ti = 26677
  2. GeForce RTX 3080 = 24544
  3. GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU = 16397

The 3080 mobile is about on par with a 3070 Desktop. However there‘s a big advantage over the 3080/3080 Ti: It has 16Gb Vram. I am using a Clevo dtr e21 equipped with a 3080 16Gb, 11900k, 64Gb ram, as my development machine, in my sparetime that combo with Blender is really doing great

Con: 64watt in idle, the system needs two power plugs :joy:

Did you checked it with HWiNFO?
Mine in very light use like writing this post is 5W for CPU 13W for GPU, but i have a bunch of stuff opened so CPU goes up to 5% and GPU to 10% for a brief moment…
But i can’t get the power drawn for the other devices, SSD etc.
I think you might achieve less consumption with a different power profile.

It is equipped with a desktop cpu, not with a mobile. I can throttle the cpu, then it‘s less consuming but slow. hwinfo64 is always one of the first installments

That do not show the different power rates of same model in laptops .You can get a 90w(+15w boost) RTX3080 up to a 150w(+15w boost).
