Large render crash - 4 gb memory ok, 2 gb not

I have just 2 gb memory and I have a 3570x5052 px render. Blender unfortunately crashes. I tested smaller size and it went OK. On another computer with 4 gb it rendered ok.
Unfortunately I have to work with the 2 gb computer.

I tried “Render regions” add-on but it does not seem to work with cycles 2.61.

Any other work-arounds I could try?

Run a mem test on the 2gig comp; less memory so it’s much more likely to use it all and it is likely to highlight any issues.

Memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/ is great; leave it overnight - eight hours minimum; memtest doesn’t tell you if your memory is ok, only if it isn’t.

Main comp has 6gig and blender crashes, sometimes it even takes down the whole comp; not found any issues with computer, memory, HD etc.

Turn down any settings that are too high (subdivision surface settings, no. of particles, mirrored/transaparent material settings, subsurf scattering etc etc)
If you have duplicate objects use the duplication options and set instancing in the render settings
Render different components of your scene separately and then composite them together afterwards.
