Hello everyone. These are some shots from the project I am currently working on (among others): Earth from space - Late Cretaceous period.
Unfortunately there are no very high quality maps to use for the purpose… and still no one has invented a time machine to go check the Earth back then
(as far as I know). Anyway hope you’ll like it

An interesting project. Are you going to do this for other periods? Will there be animation?
What about continental drift? The are plenty of maps you could use to adjust your globe for that if there is a significant difference for 80 mega-years ago.
Between the last ice age*, about 150 million yrs ago, and the current ice age, starting around 2.5 million years ago, there would be very little surface ice so a higher sea level makes sense. So the coastlines were different back then but I think the light blue areas are too bright. They look like the shallow sandy areas around some islands.
With the weight of that ice/water moved from land to sea the land would rise some and the sea floor sink a bit. The magnitude of that is much debated but it would effect sea level.
*A “chilly” age that occurred on the roughly 150 million year cycle but was not as cold as now or earlier ones.
The current project is about this period, but with a good chance I will be asked to make similar models for other periods. There is an animation but, to my great disappointment, it cannot be made public, at least for the moment.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find high resolution maps (this one I used is 1024x512, it would have been nice to find one at 4k or at least 2k). I can’t figure out how to make a map that is really useful for the purpose starting from the issue of continental drift, or at least I’m not able to make a high quality map from today’s maps (my lack). If you know maps with better resolution than this I mentioned, please give me some links.
I agree that the light blue areas are too bright but, as you rightly pointed out, the coastline must have been very different at the time, so it is assumed that there were huge areas of subsidence around the continents. I was therefore not tempted to darken them too much (even if I did it minimally), to maintain the fidelity of the map used.
Anyway, thank you very much for the feedback and let me know if you find ways to graphically optimize maps related to that period or if you already know something better than what I used!
