I am trying to use a lattice to deform a particle flame. For some reason I can’t seem to get the lattice to deform the flame. Could somebody please walk me through thisd or aim me toward a tutorial.

Creating the lattice is just the first step. Have you actually added a Lattice modifier to your emitter object?
Select emitter in Object mode, F9 for the editing context, Modifiers tab->Add Modifier-> Lattice. In the Ob: field, enter the name of your lattice.
