Layers and performance

Lately I have been working on heavy scene files (~1 Gigabits) and I’ve noticed that even when I hide a layer with some heavy objects, the overall performance is still low.
It seems like even if something is on a separate hidden layer, it still hogs the system as if it was visible.
Is there a way to split between object in a better way, performance wise?

you could try to turn off history !
if you don’t need it !

also try to get latest build
seems to be faster now
