Amazing how something like this can make all work grind to a halt.
I’ve been working on a model all day, and suddenly the buttons for selecting layers have disappeared! Also, if I press ` no layers appear. In the View menu, “show all layers” is grey. I can’t find any reference to this in the user manual either.

You are in Local view. Toggle between local and global view with Numpad/ or from the View menu
