Leather backpack - Crit away!

Hello everyone!

I’ve started on a serious game project a bit like the game Myst (although not near the same graphic quality), and for the HUD in this game I needed a picture of a backpack. Logically, I wanted to do this in Blender, and getting in my friend “Llama Man” made it great as well. He provided the main model, which I altered (such as proportions, lid shape, backpack strain, interior), but mainly I have been working on marking seams and UV-mapping. I also made a texture in Photoshop v5.0 which I’m quite happy with.

Point is; I am quite new to things such as bump mapping and normal mapping, etcetera. I need big critics on many things on this mesh: Foremost:

  • Material, texture and bumpmap
  • Mesh shape
  • Light setup

Thank you for ANY critics you can provide.

Render was done in Yafray, 800x800 px, PNG picture. As you will notice, currently only the lid is mapped with texture and bumpmap. I will however draw new textures as I go along with this topic. I also used this texture made in photoshop, which I altered with a few clicks into this bumpmap.

It looks good, but a little stiff.

The backpack texture looks reasonably good, but something I’d have to add is that if it’s supposed to be old like the texture implies you’d need some stains and unevenness. Also try some rough patches where the specular highlights aren’t so strong and stuff. Still though, the base texture looks good, keep on going.

Spenn13, I think I’ve fixed the problem. I think you meant the lid, right, it was too flat and shell-like? I tried fixing that in the new version here. Thanks a lot for your critics! It really helps.

BlackBoe, very useful comments. Thanks a lot for them. I continued the texture making, fixed the bag texture with a bump map, and added some stains and unevenness. Although I haven’t made any patches yet, but perhaps I will. Your comments really helped.

As I said, I finished the bag texture, or rather, made progress on it. Please comment on how I can improve the backpack or the textures / bumpmaps further!

Finally, I’m pretty much rounding up for a finish :slight_smile:

This backpack has been fully textured now. I must say I’m quite happy with the result. But please, leave a comment or two on what I might have to improve! :eyebrowlift:

Anything with the texture? How should I light the scene? Do you need more pictures to be able to give critics? Anything with the shape?

You might want a speculat map for something like leather.
Try using AO for lighting.

Also the texture seems a bit stretched on the bottom left.

Other then that great work!
