Leg/foot rig for dragon (bird or similar)?

Hi guys, happy holidays!
I’m working on a rig for my dragon here:

I wonder if anyone can recommend a good tutorial or example of a bird leg and foot rig? (or any similar type of leg rig) I’m using this one here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BSoD/Introduction_to_Rigging/Leg_Rigs
It’s good, but the amount of rotation possible in the joints seems to depend on the length of the bones. Can it be fixed with keys for rotation?
How about the wings?
Any help would be appreciated.

I made a custom shape and rotate it to drive the open/close action. If that action is not enough, you need to edit the IPO curve for that bone that is being drive to be more extreme.
