Legs Moving Unnaturally with IK Setup, Need Help!

Hey everyone, I’m a complete beginner with rigging and animation. I followed a YouTube tutorial, but I ran into some issues when setting up an IK for the leg. When I move the controller, the leg doesn’t move naturally like the normal one; it seems like the knees are always being squeezed outward when lifting the leg.

Could anyone explain the reason behind this issue and how to fix it? Also, I’d really appreciate it if someone could recommend a systematic tutorial for character rigging and animation. Thank you!

Hi, i think your pole target needs to be further away from the knee.

IK takes it’s hints from the angles betwen the bones in their rest pose. That’s how it determines the main axis that the bones should rotate along.

In the side view, the leg looks very straight. Looking from the front view, there is a bit of an angle between the upper and lower leg. It could be that it’s favoriting the bend to the side.

See if you can get the upper and lower leg bones to run more straight when looked at from the front, then add more of a bend from the side view. If you select the lower leg, then shift-select the upper leg and press Ctrl-Alt-A it will line them up exactly. Then you can add a bend from the side view. It can be a tiny bend, but if it’s there, the IK will try to use it.

Yeah I second that, move it further on the y axis
