less destructive sculpting with multiresolution modifier?

I’ve been sculpting with the multiresolution modifier lately, because for game work it allows me to work on a low poly and hi poly sculpt at the same time (very useful) however I’m wondering if there’s ways to make the workflow less destructive. For instance if you don’t like the way you carved some details in, is there a way to go back besides undo/saves?

I’ve tried deleting faces on the basemesh then recreating them, but blender seems to want to reinterpret stroke data back onto those faces. Any tips would be great.
