Hello my fellow Blender Artists! I was just thinking collaborating a team for making a commercial game in Blender. I think it is time that Blender gets the reputation it deserves. It can be an open project so everyone in the Blender Artists community can participate. Now I know some of you are thinking why start a commercial game in Blender right at this exact time? Well I say unto you why not? I know most of you have dreamed about a commercial game in Blender, well now this dream becomes a reality! So right now we need to think of what kind of game we are going to do, such as what kind of genre, story, universe, ect. So what do you say my fellow Blender heads?! Are you up to the challenge?!
maybe
i was thinking cars! normal from me
Currently under the GPL commercial games using the BGE are impossible… you may use models/textures from blender, but not the game runtime. When the GameKit is released with (L)GPL support, you may knock yourself out with commercial games… anyway, there’s already been numerous commercial games released using blender (not the game engine, but models, animation, etc)
So… yeah…
Bye!
I think killer’s wrong, but that’s just from Blendenzo’s words.

Actually…
You can make a commercial game with blender. Under the GPL, you can even sell the game if you want. However, if you modify blender’s source code, then you are forced to release the source code you modified. On top of that, blend files (which is blender’s standard format) can opened by anyone.
However, if you want to protect your work I suggest taking a look at the BPPlayer or the GameKit.
When the GameKit is released with (L)GPL support
By the way, the GameKit is licensed under the MIT license.
Well… If you want you can sell it… but who wants to pay for an open source game…

In theory, if you really want to sell your game you could include the source code with the binary but only after the user pays for the game.
And if open source is a problem, then just make the game closed source. (This is why I suggested the BPPlayer or the GameKit).
its a good idea but only some of us have the skills for a pro game. But hey, lets make a free game and put a review on all the major game sites. that’ll get popular.
@C-106: Incorrect, the GPL states that the source code must be FREELY available… you can purchase ubuntu if you want… but you can download the source code on their site
Well… good idea, but I suggest we either join an exsisting game, and make it a lot better so it can be commercial(say the winner of the upcoming Game Competition?) , or get a whole bunch of blender head experts together and make a game from scratch.
mokazon: It’s called cyclon =P
@C-106: Incorrect, the GPL states that the source code must be FREELY available…
True… except blend files are not under the GPL. Here is a quote from the GPL:
The act of running the Program is not restricted, and the output
from the Program is covered only if its contents constitute a
work based on theProgram (independent of having been made by
running the Program).
If identifiable sections of that work are not derived from the Program,
and can be reasonably considered independent and separate works in
themselves, then this License, and its terms, do not apply to those
sections when you distribute them as separate works.
In addition, mere aggregation of another work not based on the Program
with the Program (or with a work based on the Program) on a volume of
a storage or distribution medium does not bring the other work under
the scope of this License.
According the the GPL, blend files (or any files exported from blender) are your sol property. Therefore, you may do anything you want with a blend file (including encryption). This topic has been discussed dozens of times in several threads.
What? That goes against everything I know about the GPL… the GPL is the open source license, how can you make a closed source game under the GPL? AFAIK you could get sued for not releasing the source code.
Yeah…the BLENDER is open-source…but the .blend files are not. Which means you can encrypt and sell the blend files.
AFAIK you could get sued for not releasing the source code.
Please read the GPL. You will find that exporting a file (even from a GPL program) is 100% legal.
Edit: I swear, we need a sticky thread about this topic. The issue is discussed at least 4 times per month.
@Dudeman: I would prefer it if you had an idea, or some kind of plan… But I don’t like to join a game project, do some work on it, then 2 months later:
I Give up!
@All:There should be a sticky in the discussion section for the selling games discussion… You know, like the fan games sticky?
Yes, you can sell games… end of story… open source is open source though, wether you love it or hate it… look at yo! frankie… yes you could buy it, but also it was free… that is open source baby =)
Well I have this game called Wreckage I wanted to create, but I think I might use the Esenthel game engine for this since the blender game engine atm isn’t that great.
Hi,
Yo Frankie! was released under a Creative Commons license. It isn’t necessary for any other games created with Blender to be released this way.
