Letter K for 36 Days Of Type 2023

Another oldie of mine that I did for the 36 Days Of Type instagram art challenge back in 2023.

Every year creative people from all around the world make their interpretations of 26 letters of English alphabet + 10 numbers using any imaginable medium form graphic design to photography & painting and anything in between. So I decided to design and model letters as various spaceships in Blender.

Though I skipped the numbers (I hate math and numbers) So I only made 26 spaceships for that challenge.

Workbench view of the model with no texture:

Modeled in Blender, textured in Blender using semi-procedural texture set up I made for this art challenge and reused on few more spaceships from this set 26 illustrations. This set up is made using image with decals I made in photoshop (basically a set of random geometrical stripes and dash patterns) for color accent (here it is red) + some js placement generated plates for bump + set of grunge noises and ambient occlusion combined with some procedural edge ware. I moved around the UV layout of polygons till the abstract decals texture would start to look interesting. Letters G,H,I,J,K and R use the same texture set up, it was done to be flexible using different textures as mask so I could recolor the texture like I did for the J, K and R letters. Rendered In Blender Cycles.

Some more textured renders:

The rest illustrations from that art challenge:

Hope you find it interesting and have a nice weekend :alien: :v:

Epic. It has such an aerodynamic design, and the ship gives me Sith lord vibes! The areas where the wings attach look very good. I love the cockpit (or what I am assuming is the cockpit) I love how the design looks like the ship has giant pincers to grab other ships. I also like how the ships seems very flat/sleek/aerodynamic. Thank you, I appreciate your kind words very much ! Well, the flatness of the ship is actually an optical illusion since the wings are pretty wide and have that weird K shape form factor, the body (central part with cockpit is actually pretty chonky if seen directly from the side view) the whole K wing for factor with the cockpit/body part in center makes the same effect as a body of the spider where it has the wide spread legs in to different sides from the body and the often pretty chonky body in center witch looks small only due to the legs spread wide

Yeah, but it still looks aerodynamic. did you mean to make it look flatter or was that a byproduct of the design? yeah it is sort of look like a spider lol. Either way the flatness looks good, like a knife to cut through the air at lighting fast speed!

well, it is not like I meant to make it look flatter, also it was not a uncontrollable byproduct of the design, it was more of a design compromise…I needed to make a K shaped ship, then the creative thinking kicked in, and by tries and errors I came up with the design that pretty much works, the first attempts of making this ship had the wings in straight line parallel to the horizon, and perpendicular to the body, like a normal plane has, but since the wings are very flat keeping the wings in that position made the body part look bulky and chonky, so I decided to tilt back wings up and front wings down forcing the wings to occupy more space around the body yet maintaining to look lightweight, since I only tilt them up and down, but not adding the volume to them. It`s like in nature, animals then frightened try to spread their limbs as wide as possible and try to occupy as much space as possible to look bigger, same here, and since now with the wings occupying more space the body sems less chonky

Here are the direct straight view on the side and front of the ship, hope that will help me to explain what I mean, as you may see that the body in fact is rather chonky… if not the wide and thin wings and their position and tilt of the wings that helps to occupy as much space around the body as possible this ship would look very chonky and heavy.

Yeah, now I see what you mean lol. The cockpit is quite chunky. and yeah, having things at angles for some reason usually makes it look better (idk why)
