If something was created in 3ds max educational license and exported to blender then from blender to fbx to be put into unity could that then be used commercially?
I don’t intend to do things this way but I will be collaborating with a max artist on a project and was wondering if that would cover licensing issues?
Shugs, I think that this kinds of things can be controversial, but, between us, nobody will ever know about that, dont tell notbody and do it, then, when you get better and gather some money, buy those programas that you use. I dont know, I think that this is so small and harmelss that this should not even be a problem.
As long as you do not pack this data in a game application (exe) together with the blenderplayer it remains whatever licence it is. Otherwise it becomes GPL with all consequences.
As you described you want to use it with another application it will be treated as pure data (by Blender). = No Licence change
Ok… cool… I will only be using blender for this project but we’re running behind so someone else is being brought in to help out and they only use max…
If you are talking about models then yes its fine to use- AFAIK the model belongs intellectually to the person who made it. If thats not you, then you must seek permission beore you do anything.
yeah we’ll have permission to use the models i just wanted to know about the legality of using a non comercial copy of max and running it through blender to hide that so the models can be used for a commercial release…

The license for the educational version of Max does not allow its commercial use. I would say you would breach this in your scenario. You would be using Max to make objects for a commercial game (I assume a commercial game since you’ve asked this question), whether you then put this model though blender or any other application is irrelevant, Max is still being used.
To clarify you should speak to your tutor or ask Autodesk to clarify if this is permitted.
I haven’t met the other artist yet so we’ll see what happens, he’s donw some work experience in the industry so I’ll see what his opinions are on this… as I say I’ve said from day one of the project I wasn’t happy using the educational license for it due to that reason… I was hoping someone would say “Yes it’s fine” but I don’t think it will be… cheers anyway tho peeps…
Having had a look at Autodesks website, it does look as if you cannot legally use that educational copy of Max for commercial purposes. Stands to reason, I suppose considering the cost of the program (eye- watering!)
But unless one of us on this thread (or one of your colleagues) shops you, it would be very difficult to prove anything. So really its up to your conscience (or your Max using friend buying a commercial copy)…but officially we should be wagging our finger at you saying ‘stop!’ (wags finger, tutting).
Or just learn a cheaper program? Programs like Silo are very affordable if you just want a good modeller. You could just use Blender, which is free…
