Lictor WIP 2 ::UPDATE No. 7:: 10-25-05 Modeling Done

i dont know if you have seen job’s monster wip but i think if you made those back spike come out of a hole like the horns on jobs monstar

yea, he did a nice job. I’ll play around with it and see if that will make it look better.

UPDATE No. 3:

I added the hips and the tail base this update, as well as add depth to the scales. What do you think? C&C please.

Looks great. I really hope your texturing skills are good as your modelling skills. …

Thanks. Yea, I hope so too.

School has started for me so that means even less free time. So I probably won’t be updating as often unfortunetly. :frowning: But I will do what I can when I can. I started getting a basic head shape and will keep tweaking it before I add details. I have a feeling the head is going to be difficult, since it has to be perfect or it will look stupid. Any thing you guys suggest on how to make it easier I appreciate.

Thanks. Yea, I hope so too.

Have you done much texturing?

I have a feeling the head is going to be difficult, since it has to be perfect or it will look stupid. Any thing you guys suggest on how to make it easier I appreciate.

I think best way to model a head is to use referenceimages as background. I’d do it like that and add a plane and start extruding along referenceimages.

I have done some texturing in my day. Check the link in my sig to see some of my finished artwork.

But since I have never really modeled many organic models, much less tried to texture them, this will be a new experience for me. I plan to TRY to unwrap the model and LSCM UV map a hand painted texture.

UPDATE No. 4:

Well I finally got the head about finished. I didn’t add quite as many details to it as are in the ref, because I didn’t think it was needed. Took me a while to get the basic shape; was quite difficult to model. I had to restart a couple of times. But I think this final model turned out to be the best. What do you think?

C&C please. This head is one of the most important models for this creature. It has to look A+

TraceR

Sad to say, it looks a little lame. The tentacles look like add ons and need to integrate with the face better, the head needs to flow into the neck better for a more powerful look and the eye area (and rest of head) needs lots of work.

At the moment it looks like a duck choking on spaghetti.

Sorry for the harshness, but I feel this lacks the essence and actuallity of the original design. Maybe this model is too much of a challenge with your current skill level as you are not doing it any justice.

Maybe you should try more organic modelling before coming back to this…

Just my opinion of course,

Alex

At the moment it looks like a duck choking on spaghetti.

ROFLMAO!!

i think this is going to be the only time where i can say look at my model(which, BTW, isnt dead, ive just been busy. expect an update this year). the head doesnt look like its part of the neck. it needs to flow into the neck. make the tenticles flow into the head, not come out of it, if you understand what i mean. also, you need to model the details. it looks like a n00bs model(no offence, but it does…).

finally, a part i can bash around and be completely truthful.

ps. to all the new guys: “a n00bs model” is the only way i could describe what i mean, im not saying that you guys are awful. 99.99% of you people are way better than i was, and some of you are better than i am right now…

Ermm… Well then.

As I said, it is not yet done. Meaning, there are not as many details present as I intend to add in the future. Though I do plan to add more, I think it is unnecessary to add all of the details shown in the reference at this time.

I can see your point about the neck protrusion. I will do what I can to fix it. But note that it is difficult to judge the scale and position of certain parts do to not having a full, all angles view of my reference.

The tentacles are another issue alltogether. From what I can see judging by the reference image, it doesn’t look like I am as far off as you seem make to make it out to be. But, I see areas were I could improve, and I will do what I can to do so.

Thank you for your comments.

TraceR

um, look at the ref pic again(L1).

im pretty sure his tenticles arent a big mass, they are aranged in a circle around whatevers in there. add the skin inbetween them and you’d get my ref pic pretty much.

about the neck… his head doesnt stick straight up from the body, it come forwards more. heres mine…

http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/5125/zachhelp19wx.th.jpg

hope that helped.

please note, im not saying mine is how its supposed to be(though i think its closer).

Yea you did a nice job on yours. It looks just like the your reference, L6. But if you remember, I am attemting to model the head from L3, not L6, or L1.

You can see the difference here:

L3: http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/tyranids/extras/conceptart/popup.htm?images/L3.jpg

L6: http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/tyranids/extras/conceptart/images/L6.jpg

L1: http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/tyranids/extras/conceptart/popup.htm?images/L1.jpg

As you can see, there is quite a large difference between the two heads. I hope you weren’t critiqing my head based on your reference model. :o

But I can see where my head needs work, and I will see what I can do to fix it. Maybe make the neck wider so that it is more the shape of the head. I will work on making him lean forward more when I attach him to the body.

UPDATE No. 5

Small update here. I fixed the neck so that it blends into the head better so instead of coming strait out of the bottom of the head, it now flows right into it. As I said I will work on making him lean forward when I put th head on the body.

it looks a little better now(though im not a huge fan of L3). i think it would help to see it on the body…

yea, I can see how it didn’t look right at first. Yea, I actually like L3. Don’t know why, but it think it is the coolest. I am probably not going to put it on untill I have modeled everything. Then I will put it all on at once.

I think I am going to start on the legs now. Once I finish them, all I will have left to model will be the arms and the tail.

UPDATE No. 6

It’s hard to believe I have come this far. It seams like just yesterday I was thinking how long it would take to finish this model. And now that I have finished most of the modeling, I am closer than ever to being done.

I finished modeling the legs, arms, and tail and have joined them all together. If you have any crits on the modeling, please say so, so that I can finish tweaking this. Then I will move on to texturing.

For my first creature model, I am quite proud. If you have any constructive suggestions on how I can further improve on this, please say so. Anyway, here it is:

Now I just to figure out how I should texture this thing. I will probably try to unwrap and assign UV maps to it. I will have to try and handpaint the textures too. I am not very good at either so I will need some help. Do you guys know any good UV mapping and texture painting tutorials? I have been looking at some of the creatures on CGTalk to get some inspiration for texturing. Any help or advice would be very welcome.

Thanks,

TraceR

Very nice model man! Looks really good. I’m loving the chest, arms, and legs. Although there’s a couple things that are bothering me, the biggest being the tip of his tail, it seems far too squarish, and the spikes on it need some more work. You might try adding in a few more loops and smooth it out a bit, but then also make the base of the spikes more defined.
The other main thing is the side of his head, it just seems very bland and undefined compared to rest of the model. Might try adding some scales or something of that sort.
Aside from those two things, there were just a couple small things; the base of the wrist looks too square, just needs smoothed out a bit, and the bottom shoulder is bother me for some reason. It seems far too round or something, can’t quite pick it out though.

Could we possibly see a wireframe?

mr_bomb:

Thanks for the crits! I do plan to add more details to the head. I will probably try to do a lot of that with the texturing.

Not sure what you mean about the tip of the tail issue. Do you want me to make it rounder? It could use more details. I will see what I can do.

About the wireframe. I will see if I can post one soon.

I think the main thing is the flat part near the front of the tip. I’m just visualizing more of a scorpion type tail tip, but with spikes on it.
