Hey guys, I’m working on a lighthouse. I’m pretty satisfied with the result so far, but I think it’s missing some realism and the materials don’t look quite right yet. I would really appreciate it if you gave me some feedback.
PS: I’ m still a newbie, so don’t be too mean please:no:
Good start - you need to work on the glass material a bit, there are no reflections in your image on the glass surfaces. If you are using Cycles render, I can post you a node setup that works pretty well… Also you need some bump mapping in the red paintwork and concrete tower, again, you can get some advice in the Materials section of the forum. For the glass it is good to mix in a little Glossy shader using Fresnel feed from a Layer Weight node for the mix. This, provided the roughness is very low, will give you some reflection. Also for glass shaders, you are better to use a single poly mesh with a solidify modifier to get the right amount of distortion through the glass. This is being bit picky, but it is where you need to aim for.

Thanks for the reply(first ever:eek:). Here are my current node setups:
I just did some tweaked the materials for the glass and metal. I also gave the glass some depth, for more distortion. What do you think?
Much, much, much better! Glass is a little too thick maybe, but other than that very good. Red paint is also looking more realistic now - nice one!
It’s always tempting to over do an effect once you have your head around how to do it. I did this with rivets on a plane - made them too big and stand out too much. Sometimes you should ease back an effect until it looks like it is not quite strong enough, because it probably is…
Cheers, Clock.
12 post and only one reply - that is shameful of us. Welcome to BA then since nobody else has said that.
Thanks for the helpful support! I really appreciate it. I do think I will ask some people at the materials section, 'cause the concrete doesn’t look as good as I want it to.
Anyways,
Thank you so much and good luck with your next project(s)!
