lighting a cartoon 3D scene - tips and advices

Hello there,
is there anybody that can give me some tips when it comes to setting up the shading, lighting and Ambient occlusion for a cartoon scene like this.

-Should i use a HDRI environment texture as the base for the lighting?
-Or is it better to only work with lamps?
-any tips on how to set up the shading ?
-and which lamp would be best to setup the rim light?
