Lighting backgrounds

Hello, I have been driving myself crazy trying to find how to light a background backdrop. I have a scene with sun lit foreground but the background is just a plane with a photo off in the distance. I want this plane to not have shadows and to have a way to change its light or brightness. How do you do this with nodes?
